I am 11 months post op today. It has been an up and down road. Sometimes I feel great and then something sets it back a little. I have noticed the pain in my left side as well. It is in my lower back, hip and thigh area. I really havent followed through on it which I guess I should. I had a bone density and it did show some mild bone loss to the left hip area but I only need to take calcium at this time. Give yourself some time it will get better but I do think we will go through some ups and downs with our numbers.

I don’t know any reason for having the pain, Lisa. Getting your doctor to check for reasons is a good idea, I think.
As for carbamazole leading to osteoporosis — I don’t think that drug has osteoporosis as a side effect. But “being” hyperthyroid makes us lose bone, and if the drug was not effectively keeping you in the “normal” zone for thyroid hormone levels, then it might have contributed a bit to the problem.
I do hope you are pain free soon.

Hi all,
Im in my 12th week post op total thyroidectomy for Graves disease and up until 2 weeks ago, thought my recovery was going well.
Im on thyroxine and calcium suppliments and my calcium levels are in normal range.
Ive developed severe pain in my bones in my leg, thighs, ankle and arm on my left side. At times its too painful for me to move or walk.
And immense tiredness, I just want to sleep all the time. My recent blood test results was good although I am still slightly overactive, my doctor cannot see a reason for this severe pain.
Previous to my operation I was on Carbimizole for 2 1/2 years and I have read that long term use of this medication is not advisable and that it can lead to oesteoporosis.
Has anyone else experienced this pain after their operation or during their recovery?
Should I be concerned or is this another ailment of my condition?
I would love to hear about your experiences. Graves is such a complex condition and everyones experiences are so different.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post.
Take care

In my experience aches and pains, mild and severe, do come and go. If I don’t have any other reason to be hurting I usually assume it’s something to do with my GD. I’ve been quite achy lately and currently I am mildly hyper. In past severe episodes I have consulted my Dr. although he may not attribute the pain to a cause he usually suggests I take IB Profen to get through it. Usually that helps me get through the rough times and eventually I feel better. I hope you will consult your Dr. as sometimes we miss signs that are not necessarily GD.
Good LuckI have been experiencing hip and ankle pain. Is this normal? I am so uncomfortable and really need some help as my endo doctor is horrible! I had to stop taking tapazole because it was giving me heartburn and I am doing the iodine radiation Monday and am hoping I will feel better! Any input would be greatly appreciated as I feel really lousy.
Hip and ankle pain is not “normal.” Because the loss of muscle mass can put strain on joints, it is somewhat possible that what you are experiencing is related to elevated levels of thyroid hormone, but not necessarily. So, you might want to check with your GP. Good luck with the RAI.
