in reply to: The thyroid and gluten #1061146
Hi Erica,
I actually discovered I was gluten intolerant shortly before I was diagnosed with Grave’s. I went on a gluten free diet and yes it does help but it was very difficult to keep the diet and eventually my Grave’s got worse and I went off the diet. I believe my celiac was cause by the Grave’s however, because I had never had problem’s with wheat products until I started developing symptoms of Grave’s. They are linked though, and for anybody with Grave’s, lord knows there’s nothing lost by trying. Another thing I had noticed was that I was potassium and Magnesium deficient, so I started taking those like a year before I was diagnosed with Grave’s, and that helped also. I also realized that carnitine seemed to help. Have you read any articles regarding potassium, magnesium and copper deficiencies and their link to Grave’s? I had RAI and recently and it seems that supplementing with Magnesium and copper seems to help me.in reply to: Newly diagnosed – took RAI today #1061408Hi Gayle,
I just had RAI yesterday, and so far just some cold/allergy symptoms. My palpitations have gone away though, and I’m breathing easier. I have been on propranolol 40 mg 3xday, which was really helped in keeping my heartrate down but I was still dealing with the palpitations. That was my main reason for choosing RAI over meds. My endo is starting me on tapazole next week, so I’ll see how that goes. Keep us posted on your progress and hope you conitnue to feel better. I hope you are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel!in reply to: I chose RAI Treatment #1061709HI Dave,
Thanks for sharing your experience. I just had RAI yesterday after being diagnosed 5 weeks ago. My reason for choosing RAI over meds was the heart palpitations I was having. Yesterday afer the RAI my chest pain as practically gone and I had less palpitations than I’ve had since this started. Today was even better, so far only had palpitations when I raised my arms over my head to stretch this morning. I did wake up with allergies for the first time this year, which is strange because even though I struggle with allergies year round, the hyperthyroidism had somehow kept them at bay, almost like my autoimmune system was too busy attacking my thyroid. It could just be cold symptoms, which I hear are common after RAI.
Hope you continue to do better and keep us updated.in reply to: Breathing not sufficient or deep enough #1061589Hey Krissann,
I have been having the same problems. I’m not hyperventilating or breathing rapidly at all, and I can even take a deep breath but I just feel it’s not deep enough or "satisfactory". It has gone away, but it has gone away before and come back.
Are you hyperthyroid and on beta-blockers? Ask your doctor about switching to a a different beta-blocker if you have a history of asthma. I am hyper and currently taking 40 mg of propranolol, which is a non-selective beta-blocker and was thinking about switching back to atenolol which is a selective beta blocker and doesn’t affect your respiratory system, but the symptoms have subsided for now.in reply to: Newly diagnosed – took RAI today #1061404Hi Bobbi,
I just had RAI this morning as well…
It would be interesting to compare our experiences over the next few weeks, don’t you think?
So far all I have felt is the following:
My pulse started getting faster for a little while around 4:30, then slowed back down as the bp medication kicked in I think. I am on Propranolol 40 mg 3xday.
Also, I felt a warrmth in my stomach, and my breath was warm and moist, like you feel when you’re getting sick, but temperature normal.
My endo is going to have me start on Tapazole a week from now, which she says will help to keep me from going into thyroid storm. I have not heard of this being done in any of my online research, so you might want to ask your doctor about this if you’re worried about symptoms worsening before they get better.
