The redness of the sclera (white of the eye) is most often caused by a dry cornea (the clear protective outer layer of the eye that covers the iris, pupil, and sclera).

When you have TED it is extremely important to keep your eyes lubricated or you may end up permanently scarring your cornea. The inflammation from TED keeps the eye from fully closing when you blink, or you do not blink enough, and the surface of the cornea dries out.

Eye drops like Refresh Optive do not work for me- just like water they are gone in a blink. During the day I use GenTeal brand lubricant eye gel and Refresh P.M. lubricant eye ointment at night.

Redness and irritation are a constant battle for me but when I am diligent about applying eye gel frequently (like multiple times an hour) my eyes really do look and feel better.

Shakira, I have been taking 25 MG of Spironolactone twice a day for 14 months. I’ve experienced no side effects and am so grateful for my wonder drug. It’s been night to day going from losing hair literally by the handful to having a full head of hair- I’m no longer losing hair and it continues to grow back.

I was losing a SIGNIFICANT amount of hair daily. Of course I blamed this on my thyroid- or lack of, and assumed my TSH was off and my Levothyroxine needed adjusted. Not so. My PCP sent me to a dermatologist who biopsied my scalp and then prescribed Spironolactone for my alopecia. Within one month of taking the Spironolactone not only did I stop losing hair, my hair also started to grow back. My PCP was amazed. One year later I still take this medication and have a full head of hair. I recommend you see a dermatologist.

I would like to know if there have been any recent developments regarding selenium supplementation as treatment for Graves Eye Disease. I had been taking selenium for two months but had to discontinue since I am now enrolled in a clinical trial.
