in reply to: What am I in for? #1074332
I loved the fact that I was faster than any one else as well. I also loved walking around in the dead of winter needing nothing more than a sweatshirt. Or at least I thought I did. It was only after surgery and stablizing with synthroid that I realized how sick I had been. Check your pulse rate, you will be shocked! Honestly, I thought I would miss being hyper, but the truth is being well is so much better.
in reply to: Choosing Thyroidectomy on Purpose #1075739My endo would not give me a choice. Because I was in my early thirties and could possibly have more children. I had a thyroidectomy. I think the fear was a pregnancy to close to RAI? I had a wonderful surgeon and a relatively quick recovery. My scar is less than most so I have no complaints. He took 95% of the thyroid. My Mom had RAI. It worked. She had a rough time, but she also has fibromyalga and Rhuematoid so not sure what was RAI related. I can tell you I wouldn’t let anyone near my throat with a scalple until I was comfortable with it. I asked a lot of questions, starting with "how many of these have you done?" Good luck with your decision!

in reply to: Looking for stories #1074643My daughter is 11 and was diagnosed in November. If you want to send me some questions I am sure she would answer them. It might help her to know there are other young people with Graves. I have it, and so does my Mom, but we were diagnosed much later. It is just not the same. I think your film is a GREAT idea. The worst part for her has been activity restriction while she waits for her numbers to come down. She plays sports and she misses them terribly.
in reply to: Newly Diagnosed & Struggling #1074857KC,
I am new here as well! My thyroid was removed several years ago. I stuggled with my weight for a long time. One piece of advice I can give you is absolutely take your synthroid the same time EVERY day. I was not able to control my weight until I was very consistant with my dose. It takes a while for things to get under control, but they will get there!in reply to: PTU QUESTIONS! #1074763Her Dr. is aware, if the situation does not worsen this week, we speak again on Friday to determine a course of action. Just wondering if some side affects go away with time. I am worried about RAI at this age, right before puberty.
in reply to: PTU QUESTIONS! #1074761My daughter is 11, diagnosed Nov 7. Broke out with hives severe with Methamazol. Now on PTU. After 3 weeks started getting itchty red patches that develop hives when she scratches. I can control this with Clariton. Otherwise doing very well. More labs Thurs. Anyone have hives experience? I have Graves, surgery about 8 years ago and I don’t remember much! My Mom has Graves and had radio ablation 3 years ago. My only sister has Hashi’s, (Talk about a family history!) But this is my child and I would like to avoid RAI at least until after puberty. Has anyone had a drug reaction improve with time and staying on the drug?
Thanks, Trisha
