A BIG congratulations to you and your husband about your pregnancy. I suggest you ask either your PCP and/or your OB for them names of a couple endocrinologists who work with Grave’s in your area. Do you live in a place large enough to have this choice? Of course these numbers mean nothing to you at this time. I guess the big message to you, is that you do need to have an endocrinologist working in close tandem with you, and with your OB. You did not say if you were hypo, or hyper. When you contact an endocrinologist, you should say that you re newly pregnant. Get a print-out from your OB of your labs to have for your records. If your insurance requires you to have a referral, probably it makes sense for your OB to refer, but you can certainly get names of endocrinologists from both your OB and/or PCP. YOu will feel confident once this step is accomplished, and you will also feel better physically! It is probably difficult for you to differentiate the fatigue of pregnancy from the fatigue you might have if you re hypothyroid. a I imagine the administrator of this site will be responding soon, and that should be helpful to you also. Best wishes, this is a great and responsible site, glad you found it.

To elf…how long did it take for all the swelling to go away after your ocular decompression? I am scheduled for one 2/2/10, quite apprehensive about it. Any advice/comments you have are sure welcome.

Hi enough, you sure got a lot of responses, and a lot of new friends. Are you learning anything from having a thyroid panel every two weeks? When you are prescribed a thyroid replacement dose, decisions about whether to change the dose should be made around two months after the dose change, also incorporating how you are feeling/doing.
I would be a bit concerned if thyroid replacement doses are being determined by a lab in two weeks. IT takes a lot longer than that for the body to adjust to the new dose. At any rate, it is a good thing for you to discuss with your endocrinologist. Of course I don’t know all the details of your specific situation, and what I have said may not be applicable at all for you. I can certainly appreciate that you don’t want to be real hypo, it is disturbing to be always cold and always tired. I am sure you will get to just the right place for you. IT is quite a roller coaster.

in reply to: Back Pain #1066990

Gosh, I sure am sorry about your back pain. You got some good answers, but since it seems uncommon, I would try to be more forceful, get the attention of the guy who keeps telling you it is expected. If that fails, and your insurance allows, I would make an appt. with a different endo. It sounds like you primary care doc has not helped you a lot. IT is so so hard to get the right combination of docs. I am concerned @ your back pain, ’cause it is really impacting your quality of life. I would push harder to get a doc to support you trying the muscle relaxants. Best of luck to you with this, and be sure to write back with your progress or lack of it. Hope it gets resolved soon.

Hi Katy, you got some excellent replies to your dilemma. I am sure your doc will tell you what ski referred to, that is,
you can’t be to toxic when you have a sub-total thyroidectomy. In 1959, I had "post partum thyroxicosis" after I had a baby. I was on PTU, several times. I decided on a subtotal thyroidectomy, recovered quickly. For 35 years, after the surgery, I was euthyroid (neither hyper or hypo) then began taking a little Synthroid. It was not until five decades later that I had Graves Eye Disease. With your reactions and allergies, I am hoping you and your docs can work out a safe answer for you, so you can move ahead and have that baby! Best wishes to you.
