enough3- I hardly ate at all when I gained the weight. I had the metabolism of a slug and even with heavy exercise and 1000 calories (I kept track!) I still gained. It seemed like every morning I would get on the scale and it would be half a pound up from the day before. I think I retained more water when I was hypo, though, so some of that weight could certainly be due to water retention. At my worst of hypo I found it difficult to move sometimes… like I’d be sitting on the couch and just couldn’t scrape myself up. I drank POTS of coffee just to keep moving. My legs would literally fall asleep while I was running and sometimes I thought maybe I would just nod off, too. My RHR fell into the low 30’s (normal is high 40’s for me), I complained loudly to the doctor and still she didn’t want me to get my labs any earlier and wouldn’t give me replacement until I had the labs. I seriously considered just going to the ER and trying to get help there, I was afraid to go to sleep.. afraid my heart would just stop. The doctor insisted that with my normally low HR that I would be okay, and in the end, I am. The weight gain was a real downer, but at least it’s going away now. I think we have this idea in our minds that hypo people are overweight, but I’m now realizing that it’s probably the hypo people who do not have adequate replacement that maybe have troubles and as long as we keep up with the labs and taking the thyroid we should be okay.

Hi! I don’t remember all the details (oh, how soon we forget!)… but
small goiter/high uptake = I got just 7mci on July 20
I was euthyroid at my 4 week labs, but still felt hyper.
By Sept I felt pretty good for about 2 weeks and then started crashing hard into hypo
End Sept hypo and started Levo on 9/23 (2 months after ablation)

Original dx w/Graves’ was in June, and I lost 5 pounds while hyper
I gained that plus 10 more back by September… but am now back down to only 2 pounds over my pre-Graves’ weight.
The hypo part was really, really, hard… it seemed I ate 1000 calories a day (plus I run, ALOT) and still I was gaining. But as soon as I got on the replacement it got better. I’ve been losing again. I eat pretty much, but also run 50+ miles per week. I feel great, better than pre-Graves’ (it’s probable I have had thyroid issues for a long, long time).

Great news enough3! Since your t3 and t4 are in range your tsh is probably not too far behind!

Hey gals! Just thought I’d check-in. Still right at 140 pounds. I’m now 4 months post-RAI and ran a half marathon yesterday. My finish time was almost the same as the last one I ran (in May) when I was just getting the Graves’ symptoms and had yet to be diagnosed, so I am pretty excited that I’m at least back to where I was. I’m 5 pounds heavier, but just as strong or stronger. Still on 75 mcg Levo and pretty sure I’m still hypo, no labs due til mid December, though. Down to about 3 cups of coffee per day which is pretty good for me. Hope you all are well.

Way to go ewmb and Kimberly on the weight losses! Wow, I can’t even fathom giving up caffeine. I’m seriously addicted. I was even drinking Red Bull when I was in extreme hypo-land just so I could continue functioning!

I guess I’m still in extreme hypo-land since I went to the doc and got my labs back today and my TSH is 46. something. Up from 29. something. She upped my Levo from 50 to 75. She would have gone up to 100 (which is about a full replacement dose for me) but I told her I was feeling pretty okay and didn’t really feel THAT hypo. I had expected close to normal and was amazed that I was even more hypo than before- since I do feel better and even hyper sometimes (hehe, maybe it’s the red bull?). My weight was creeping again and I am feeling rather bloatish, and I think those are hypo signs for me, so we’ll see. Crazy thyroid mess! Oh well, I do feel a ton better than hyper. It would be great to lose 5-10 pounds more, though!

hyperm- maybe the hair falling out thing is from the quickly changing from hyper to normal to hypo? That’s when I noticed mine was the worst, when the levels were swinging from one extreme to the other. How are you feeling otherwise these days?

Well, I did skip my dose for 3 days. Bad, bad, bad me. And now I’m back to taking half of it and feeling pretty good. I don’t know what to do- I go to the doctor next week and she’ll probably yell at me. I did get the OK to do my labs this week so that she has them by my appt. But all she’s taking is the TSH and if I went from hypo to normal and then pushing hyper these past few days- the TSH which lags behind- isn’t going to show it. But the good news is I’m down to 139- yay, back under 140 and "only" 5 pounds up from my pre-Graves’ weight. I haven’t felt as hungry and have been running and working a lot. I do have just about the "right" amount of energy- and my HR has seemed pretty close to where it was before all of this began. Maybe this is normal? for now anyways .

Hi mama44, It might take a little while for your levels to go down to normal. I still felt hyper at 6 weeks, too. But then went hypo pretty quickly after that. Everyone’s different, though. Do you feel better than before? Hopefully you do- and that would be a good sign that things are heading in the right direction. Keep us posted

Nick, when I had mine I was supposed to get 7.0 and it was 7.3. The tech told me when he measured it there at the lab that it was slightly more than I was prescribed but they give you the whole thing.

Good luck, Nick and Sallie!

How long since you’re levels were normal? And are you on replacement? Sounds like maybe you’re dose might be a lil too high? Or else the dreaded "M"? I have felt the same way, the past few nights have been warmer here, too. I went from freezing when I was hypo to being warm again now. It could even just be "normal" again and we are so used to being cold that now it feels weird? Except I feel hyper, so in my case I think I am on too much Levo or my thyroid is going wacked again.

Woo-Hoo, Madame X! Don’t you just love that energy??? I found it, too. Except now I think I’m heading hyper again.

Kimberly- Good luck with the WW’s. Did you have fun in Charlotte???

Well, I lost a few pounds really fast and thought it was GOOD, down around 138- but now I’m sorry to say that the evil hyper beast may be roaring her head. I had a bad couple runs heart rate wise, and the weight loss, and noticing periods of fast HR, I’m talking too fast and not sleeping too well. Since there’s no way to reach my doctor Friday through Monday, I stopped taking the Levo on Friday. I figured I’d just "forget" Friday and see what happened. Then I still felt hyper Saturday, so I forgot again. Guess what? I still feel hyper. I suppose I will have to place the doc call on Monday and let her know what’s up. I’m sure I’ll be chastised for "forgetting" to take my medicine. I’m disgusted. It better not be coming back 3 months post RAI.

Thanks for the encouragement. I know I can always count on you guys. I slept a little better last night and sort of feel less hyper today. The throat thing is weird. It doesn’t hurt bad, just feels funny. It is worse after I run, and I started noticing it even before I was officially diagnosed with Graves’. After I ran a hard race, it would hurt like this- and I really thought it was just from all of that in and out breathing— until after I had RAI and now I think it has to do with my thyroid being inflamed. Because after RAI, even when I wasn’t running, I would have a day or two when my throat would feel like this and my hyper symptoms would be worse. But then the throat would be fine and I’d be more hypo each time. I told DH I was tempted to just take half my Levo dose this morning and he said no, I should take it like I’m supposed to. Maybe this is just how normal feels? On a good note I lost about 5 pounds– and ewmb, my eyes are not puffy anymore, either. I really think it was water weight from being hypo. I look normal again! Now if I just "knew" what "normal" felt like!!!

in reply to: Hi!! New Here #1067828

Hi Stacy- my TSH was 29.6 . I’ve seen plenty higher, but mine was high enough to have me pasted to the furniture. I feel better than that now, but I think I need more than 50. If my thyroid produced no hormones, my full replacement dose based on weight would be about 100. I hope they try me on at least 75 when I go for my next labs. Glad your BP is coming down.

Hello Stacy! Just thought I’d say hi since you sound like my twin— I had rai on 7/20 and went hypo with the same symptoms as you- low pulse, BP, feel like a slug and gained 10+ pounds, started levoxyl on 9/22. My endo would only give me 50 mcg to start and I know I need more. I feel like a synthroid junkie… can’t wait for my next appt so I can get a bigger fix. But you’re right, it’s all better than the palpatations and craziness that went with hyper. I am really disgusted with the weight, tho. My appt and labs don’t get done til first week of Nov, so I’m just trying to deal with it until then. What’s your starting dose of synthroid? Take care!!!

ewmb- Great job on the 5 pounds!!!!

MadameX- WOW, sounds like you have been busy- way to go!!!

I’m still at 142- been here a couple a weeks, so at least I stopped gaining. Been trying to track everything and exercise. Right now I guess I’m okay with just staying here until my Levo dose gets upped and then hopefully I can lose it. Still 3 weeks away from seeing the doc and having labs done. I can tell that the 50 mcg I’m currently taking has made a difference, but I’m fairly certain I’m still hypo. Resting pulse still goes in the high 30’s and I feel very tired like all I want to do is be a slug. I have been using a diet I got from Women’s Health magazine and trying to follow it during the week. I get to have protein shakes which are pretty yummy. But still find myself carbo binging now and then. I feel like eating carbs will perk me up and get me moving again, so end up eating cookies and then have to skip my dinner to make up for the calories!!! It’s been difficult to make myself go run when all I really want to do is take a nap. Heading out there now into the cold and rain!
