Isn’t weight bearing exercise good for us? That would build muscle and strengthen bones. Walking, even vigorous rocking in you favorite rocker. Some weight training may be ok. Not an all-out 200 pound barbell, of course, just 1 lb. weights, working up to 5 lbs. Gee, I hope it’s ok that I’ve been doing this!
in reply to: Thyroid Uptake Results…What Were Yours? #1070691On thyroid uptake and scan, Tech impression: 1. NORMAL THYROID NUCLEAR MEDICINE SCAN WITH NO EVIDENCE FOR HOT OR COLD NODULE 2. ABNORMAL THYROID UPTAKE. 4 HOUR AT 35% (NORMAL RANGE IS 5.3) The tech gave me the impression that results weren’t very good. My doctor didn’t ask to see anything else. She immediately put me on beta blocker and 2 weeks later tamazole.
That same day, TSH was <0.01. Reference numbers range from 0.34-4.82 uIU/ml. T4 (FREE) was 4.6, reference numbers range from 0.8-1.8 ng/dL.
I also had a thyroid ultrasound. Tech’s impression: 1. BILATERAL HETEROGENOUS AND HYPERVASCULAR THYROID LOBES. 2. RIGHT THYROID LOBE MID POLE SHOWS A SMALL COMPLEX NODULE.
Hope this info helps someone out there.in reply to: Weight gain during Graves disease #1070997Hi, and welcome, Miranda Rose. I’m in total shock. I didn’t know that you could gain as well as lose. I’m short, too, about 130 now, from 170. I confess, I kinda saw it as a good thing. But since you brought this up, I’m wondering if my two daughters have thyroid probs too. They are as heavy as I am thin. And it seems diet doesn’t play a big part for them. Hmmmm?
But back to your problem. What’s your diet like? Are you avoiding red meats and eating chicken, fish, and lean pork and turkey? Someone here also said to avoid processed foods, use fresh veg and fruit whenever possible. water down fruit juices a little, they do have a lot of sugar. Avoid diet sodas. The make you crave real sugar! There are lots of goodies you can have, though. One of my faves is a ripe canteloupe, cut in half, seeds removed. Fill the cavity with lite whipped cream. It subs for ice cream w/o so many calories. And don’t forget to keep your potassium, vitamin D, and calcium levels up. Graves’ can apparently cause bone problems. SKIM MILK, ok? If you are lactose intolerant, as many of us are, use walmart brand lactaid. It has the same vitamins as milk.
Hope all this helps a LITTLE! Best of luck, and remember, you can ask this forum anything.Welcome, Michelle. Yeah, it is scary. I was diagnosed last month, and I’m suffering the effects of methimazole too. Was the doctor who started you on tapazole an endocrinologist? Most G.P.’s don’t know a whole lot about Graves’. Although my G.P. did start me on methimazole, she won’t do anything else until I see an endo.
I understand from reading the posts here that life can be difficult for us, at times. But as you read more, you’ll see that a lot of us are doing fine. As near as I can tell, you’re doing the right thing. Count your blessings EVERY day. Best of luck to youI’ve noticed acne and blackheads, thinning skin (loss of collagen), and fungal problems. My doctor says ANYTHING can happen with G.D. My two older sisters look 10 years younger than me. The only good thing is that I’m skinnier than either of them! Of course, this is due to G.D., but it still counts for me! LOL
Take your victories where you can get them, I say. Seriously, you need to treat your skin as if it’s very sensitive. Get hypoallergenic everything, body wash, shampoo, etc…That should help a little.in reply to: Freakin’ out over new diagnosis #1071043Firstly, thank you, hyperM. This site is just what I need at the mo. I have a bunch of questions for my pcp now. All I got from her was a printout about gd, not a lot of info!
It’s nice to know that all of you are out there trying to help each other. Since reading these posts, I’ve discovered that I have many of the symptoms other patients have reported. I just didn’t realize that they were related to gd. Unfortunately, I’m an "older woman" and that changes the way my treatment goes, if the literature is to be believed. I am trying to educate myself online, but this forum is an education in itself!
I may direct my family to this site, they need info more than I do. They still don’t understand why I’m always tired and achy, why my eyes bother me, why I can’t sleep, etc…and I do miss my Mom… ” title=”Sad” />
Again, Thanks for being here! -
