in reply to: Anxiety despite normal numbers. #1182018
Hi,
Here’s a little more information. We are all “intolerant” of adrenaline. It’s job is to activate us, and too much sends us into orbit. If you are taking Armour, you are doing that every time you take it.
If a “small dose” of propanalol eliminates your anxiety, it is certainly clinically acceptable. I recently had locum tenems position in a South Florida Community Mental Health Center where we were using that a great deal., in order to decrease the use, and dependence on, benzodiazapines (Valium, Xanax, etc). Additionally, it is exactly the SSRI’s (and SNRI’s – more expensive) that work the best with hyperthyroid patients. They need to be started at very low doses , and increased every two weeks in order to introduce them into your system without side effects.
If your primary doctor, or endo is not comfortable with this, a psychiatrist should certainly understand this. Don’t freak because I said the “P” word–that’s what they are there for. My specialty is psychiatry and mental health. If you need to e-mail me, please don’t use the PM. My e-mail is “nancyngdf@gmail.com”
Don’t give up, and try mot to get discouraged.
Take care,
Nancy
Douglene,
You will surely be hearing from Kimberly Dorris. We call it being “greater than Graves'”, Many thanks for your interest!

in reply to: Double vision help? #1182007Hi,
The only thing I would add is that as long as you are having a “doctor’s change”, the place that makes your glasses will usually replace the lenses for free. Places like Lenscrafter’s will do that. They used to require that you buy one new pair of glasses (meaning frames and lenses), but then they will replace the lenses. When I had my initial surgery for double vision, they were being replaced every week. When I went in last week to get some temporary glasses following recent cataract surgery, they said they would replace the lenses with a doctor’s change…and I was using old frames. Obviously, check with the manager, but it should be possible. Prisms IN the glasses are much easier to use than the ones that stick on, and they both cost about the same…and the stick-on ones do not get replaced for free.

in reply to: Just for Fun – The “Off Topic” Thread! #1177867Okay! I can get into this conversation. My daughter had a turtle wander into their property. They found that it was an African Spur Thigh. They live in rural North Central Florida. They kept it for over five years. She said it weighed over 60 pounds when they gave it to someone else. I remember they used to bring it inside and put it in their garden tub on cold nights.
What I have at home are two cats. I had two sister tuxedo cats for almost 20 years. One of them developed hyperthyroidism (irritable, losing weight, losing hair and hot all the time). She had surgery, and lived for another 7-8 years. Now I have a Calico, and a long-haired yellow female tabby. The first is 12 y/o and the other is almost three. I am a sucker for all cat trinkets (t-shirts, key rings, etc).

in reply to: My 6 year old daughter has Graves’ #1181904Sarah,
Were you able to get in touch with some parents? Did you get the information you needed? If not, let me know and we will find some parents for you.
I do know that thyroidectomies and/or RAI are legitimate choices for children–obviously special, specialists are needed.Take care,
Nancy
in reply to: Articles on Pyschological Impact of Graves #1181798There were a couple of responses, so here it is back on the “front page”
Russ,
Yep! She’s fortunate, and so are you. You are certainly welcome here, but there is a very active patient in Australia. The Australian Thyroid Foundation is located at Suite 2, Melville Street, Parramatta, NSW 2150 Australia. “info@thyroidfoundation.com.au” Get in touch with them, too. Beverly Garside is their President and Founder.

in reply to: Article in New York Times today, link is below. #1181957Thanks for this link, Shirley. I can enlarge the text and print it out. It is also VERY scary. People do not understand how potent thyroid hormone e is, and think it will make them “feel batter”…not knowing all the DAMAGE that it can do.

in reply to: Please tell me it gets better #1181991It is good to hear from you. Welcome to our little corner of the world.
In a word: Yes, it gets better
In a sentence: It may take time, and always longer than we wish, because “already” is when we would have liked to feel better!
In a paragraph: if you have to decide on definitive treatment, try to do your research with reliable resources. There is a good bulletin on comparing the treatments (go to the Home Page). There are even good articles on surgery (by Dr. Cord Sturgeon). I have a packet of articles on the emotional manifestations of Graves’, because that is the original reason for the Foundation’s creations. Send me four stamps, and your name, address, etc. and I will mail them immediately. My address: 84 Streamside Drive, Hendersonville, NC 28791. I will write more later. My eyes are giving me a hard time right now, and I just can’t see well enough to type lots of information.
Best news: You are NOT going crazy–even if it feels like it.

Nancy
in reply to: Felling ill after I 131 treatment needing advice #1181999Lori,
Thank you for saying that this site has calmed your nerves and helped you understand what is going on. That’s the whole purpose. Great post by Rob told me things I didn’t know. Do keep us posted, and you will be better and on the [sometimes long] way to getting better.
Everyone does not have the reaction you are having. Some of us actually got to go have RAI at lunch, and went back to work. It was eyes that brought me to my knees!

Nancy
Call your doctor, NOW. Re-read Kimberley’s post.

in reply to: Pain with Graves Eye Disease??? #1181937Hi,
I will try to help answer your question, but need some more information. what kind of pain, where, when, etc. Are your eye closing at night? Are you seeing a neuro-ophthamologist (someone who sees a lot of Graves’ eye disease).
Take care,
Nancy
in reply to: Herbs and Graves, my experience #1181849I totally agree with Kimberly. “herbs” are the same things as medicines. They change and alter many things in our bodies, as well as change the way some medications act. BE CAREFUL.
When you talk about pressure, I assume you are talking about the intraocular pressures they measure when Glaucoma is suspected. Because of your fluctuating pressures, you need to continue to have that checked on a regular basis, for while it is not actually related to Graves’ eye disease, it is something that can cause blindness.
