Urine issues can certainly be caused by GD! I was on a roller coaster of hyper/hypo for a few months and came to know that urinary incontinence was the first sign that confirmed I was becoming hyper. I also had repeated bouts of cystitis and irritated bladder where I needed to go all the time, but only a trickle would come out, just like your daughter. I had 3 urine tests over a couple of months and they were all negative for infection. It was all very unpleasant and distressing. However, endo didn’t seem to think it was related to GD. I was referred to a urologist and he hadn’t heard of a connection either. I am now in remission and the urine problems have gone as well. There is so much that is unknown about this disease.

best of luck to you and your little girl!

Thyroid imbalance completely messes up your cycle. I am also 47 and was barely having a cycle when HYPER. On Methimazole I was still measuring low on TSH but my periods were heavy and frequent (and I felt HYPO) and I took myself off the meds and now in remission and cycle has returned to almost clockwork rhythm. It affects everything. i don’t think there’s a body system that isn’t affected by thyroid dysfunction. Good luck to you!

I took 30mg of Methimazole for about a month, 20mg for about a month, went off it completely, then went on 5g/day for about 2 or 3 months. Didn’t feel great but wasn’t hyper and went off it again completely and quickly went into remission (once I went off the meds). Have been in remission now for 4 or 5 months.

Best of luck to you whatever choice you make. I understand how challenging it can be to have GD especially when you are taking care of little kids because it bounces you around so much emotionally and with energy levels. I used ATDs (methimazole) and very quickly the GD went into remission. It took a little while to find the right dose and the endo gave me a big dose to match my big symptoms at first which was way too much for me and I quickly went hypo, but we got it right and after only a couple of months at that dose I went off the drugs and thyroid is back to normal, at least for the time being. I hope you have some good help and manage to get a little "me" time in the coming months.

My antibody levels were still high when I decided to go off the methimazole as I just wasn’t feeling right. Endo said I would definitely go hyper again due to antibodies and guess what! Since I have been off the meds all my numbers have moved into the normal range for the first time since diagnosis and I am officially in remission. He has now said that my antibodies must be low (hasn’t checked them again) because levels are normal and eye protrusion has diminished. Also said I don’t need to see him again and get blood checked every 6 months unless i start having symptoms again. It is a very individualized journey.

Restorative yoga can be very helpful, but as a teacher I would suggest not doing any long holds of postures and not doing ANY backbends because they will be too stimulating. So no cobra, warrior, bow etc. Forward bending is considered more calming and therefore more appropriate for someone with GD.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks for the perspective. I do keep myself healthy and intend to continue to do that. And I don’t plan on having any events as stressful as what I experienced in 2008, but hey, you can never predict that stuff, can you?

My point was that I think it is important for patients with ANY diagnosis to rigorously question their care providers and be proactive in deciding which treatments are received.

Interestingly, my husband’s cousin was also diagnosed with GD at the same time as me and also achieved remission very quickly. His course of medication was very different from mine, started low and had subtle changes rather than radical shifts like I was prescribed. My endo told me I was unlikely to get any help from the anti-thyroid meds, however, so I think that was really off the mark.

Best of luck to you all!
