    Hi Michelle,

Not sure I can be much help… I have the bulging eyes and am hyperthyroid but haven’t been tested for Graves’ yet, never needed glasses before, am 42, and first saw an opthamologist because my vision was suddenly blurry about 4-5 months ago regardless, near or far. I work on a computer 40 hrs a week and my husband’s unemployed so I can’t afford to not work. Optha first thought my age was the cause of the blurriness and that was before my eyes bulged so I thought he must be right. He also kept recommending lubricating eye drops. It took quite a while and many different kinds of lubricating eye drops that he let me try over many different appointments to find the one that worked best. Also took several different glasses prescription adjustments to get what worked best. Glasses still aren’t perfect but they get me through each day much much better than without them. I also use an eye ointment overnight. I’ve had a few instances of double vision, but since I’ve combined the best glasses prescription worn every day all day even when I’m not at work just to help keep the eye muscles from getting fatigued as much as possible, the lubricating eye drops (preservative free) probably a dozen or more times a day, and the eye ointment each night, the double vision doesn’t happen and the blurriness is much much better. Work is definitely do-able this way instead of seeming impossible like it did before this combination. You’re so close to graduating. I sure do hope you find what works best for you so the reading problems don’t get in the way of your school success. Best wishes, LBKT

Please give advice… Has anyone tried the ‘Tranquileyes’ Eye hydrating therapy with or without the ‘ThermoEyes Enhancement System’? You can see it at http://www.dreamessentials.com/a_mask_tranquileyes.aspx Thank you. Any feedback at all would be extremely helpful.

Hi azroses2322, please share with me the ‘daytime eye lubricants’ you mention. I use a moiturizing eye drop during the day maybe a dozen times when I’m at work and still feel eye irritation like it’s just not doing enough. I’ve tried 3 different sleep eye masks, none with the eye "wells" though. My problem with the eye masks I’ve used is that the next day I have double vision, mostly in my right eye, the worst one. I thought the sleep eye masks were supposed to be helpful by putting light pressure over night on ‘bulging’ eyes to help them not bulge as much but I must have been wrong about that. The eye masks with "wells", do they still work to help keep eyes shut over night? I think my right eye stays a small amount open when I sleep. I tried using the medical tape that’s easy to take off to keep my eyes closed over night but it really didn’t work well enough to keep doing it. Thank you for your post!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. So far I’ve found an over-the-counter, sensitive, preservative free, lubricant eye ointment called ‘Refresh PM’ that is working very well. I’m pretty sure someone on this site suggested it but I can’t find where right now. I work on a computer 40 hours a week so I can’t tell you how good it feels to have found something that really helps. Thanks again.

Thank you for your reply. The eye gel and gel drops are something that sounds like I could try it. These are more than just moisturizing eye drops, right? Are eye gel and gel drops over the counter? I’ve never noticed them. I definitely want something I can use overnight, and something that is moisturizing. You can’t ‘over’ moisturize your eyes can you? I sleep on my side so something that stays put on my eyes is exactly what I’m hoping for.

Hi Starvee44, I’m newly diagnosed hyperthyroid, haven’t been Grave’s tested yet, but have the bulgy eyes that seem to be getting bigger so far just about 2 weeks from starting an anti-thyroid med. I think one eye may not close all the way while sleeping. I work 40 hours a week on a computer and have begun wearing glasses for the first time in my life to help with the blurred vision that started just before my eyes bulged. I use moisturizing eye drops 4 or so times a day. Below you suggest ‘a good eye mask, a strong (prescription) vitamine cure… herbs’. I’m hoping you’ll share specifically what you’d consider a good eye mask. I tried a cheap gel eye sleep mask but I didn’t think it worked well. Is there a specific overnight eye mask you’d recommend? Just a sleep mask? A ‘beauty’ mask that’s said to help with ‘puffiness’ or circles under the eyes? Or a mask that includes some kind of moisture for the eye balls themselves? I’m also hoping you’ll share specifically what you’d consider a helpful ‘strong vitamin cure’ and ‘herbs’. I’m not having any luck with on-line searches for these things, getting suggestions from my doctors, health food or beauty supply stores, or finding any specific info in the Grave’s books I’ve started reading. I’ll definitely keep searching but any specific suggestions you have to offer would be greatly appeciated. LBKT

Hi ewmb, thank you for your reply. Am I understanding right that TED is a separate condition from the bulging eyes of Grave’s? I have had the thyroid uptake scan so I guess the endocrinologist means the antibody test. Is the antibody test a blood test? Some other scan? Something else? I think the uptake fill in pattern showed the whole thyroid. Regardless if the bulging eyes of Grave’s and TED are separate conditions, either way the eyes are made worse by radioactive iodine, right? The anti-thyroid medicine is my first choice. I don’t think I’d be comfortable with the radioactive iodine anyway if I can avoid it. If surgery ends up being something I need to consider, I’ve been told that in addition to the concern of damaging the voice because of a nerve near or in the thyroid, one needs to be careful with the ‘para’thyroid. I don’t know what the ‘para’thyroid is or what it does. Can the thyroid be removed without damaging the ‘para’thyroid and still stop the hyperthyroidism? Did the RAI also deactivate your ‘para’thyroid? I hope all is going well for you since the RAI. Thanks again.

Hi Rfayley, thank you for your reply. I have had both a blood test and the thyroid uptake scan but the doctor still said ‘testing to be sure it was Grave’s would be expensive and wouldn’t change treatment’. I think she did say my uptake was 0.2. Does that mean 20%? Is that too low for Grave’s? Thank you for the encouragement. Yes, I think I’ll push for a definitive test.
