Thanks everyone – I really appreciate your posts – guess I just have to hang in there and wait for the worst to pass. I am worried that I may have to take a leave from work since I am wondering how I am going to get through the day with this.. it is all really scarey.
Has anyone ever used Botox or steroid injections into the eye – is that relatively new – do we have any information on this?
    thanks

    Hi all
Just adding my voice to the chorus…. I understand what you are going through… Justin- you are certainly not alone in your emotions – and Hopeful, when I read about your anxiety and panic – I can understand it 100%-
On a day to day basis I wake up wondering so what is going to happen with my body next! For me, its my eye sight… in a matter of months I suddenly see double in the morning and am dizzy… it seems to go away as the morning progresses, but I can’t look up or to the sides without seeing double in the day.
This disease sucks… But I am happy to have this forum, to realize I am not alone and my sense of panic is pretty normal!

Hang in there, things will get better – and I am sure that if you hang out with a good friend it will help to bring a little laughter into your day.
    All the best,

Just to let everyone know… I discovered what has been going on… I went to the eye doctor.. my optometrist… who is great… and turns out I am allergic to the preservative in the antibiotic I was taking.. my eye is pretty scary blood shot and a big bubble on the side… but apparently it will go away..
So thankfully now I only have to deal with my painful eye, double vision, dryness and swollen eyes… for now…
I wish I could be transported to the future when my eyes are better again!!

    Hi again
So my doctor put me on gentimicin… eye drops… and now my eye has gotten worse… more red and has a little bubble on the side – and it really hurts on that side. Yow… not sure what to do now… but I can’t seem to hand the antibiotic in my eye, so I stopped using it…
    Has anyone had this before…

Thanks for your replies… The eye doctor mentioned conjunctivitis… but didn’t give me anything… this was a month ago… but its weird, the eye pain is just in one eye. I am using eye lubricants in both eyes.. but still the one hurts more… Is this something that occurs with TED?
    Thanks

I wish you the very best for your surgery. I can understand being nervous but think of this as a new beginning towards better health…
A friend of mine had her thyroid out – and the scar is really not that bad – she said she started feeling better within 2 weeks-
Why not go out and buy yourself a pretty new necklace after you recover and that will make you feel better about the scar.
    Huge hugs….

    Good point Ski!
Unfortunately, I find that my doctor really does not understand anything but pharmaceutical drugs…. I wonder why… all those free samples!!
I do ask but don’t get many answers… however in contrast my pharmacist is very helpful and will pull out the book to ensure what the toxicity levels are and what potential interactions there could potentially be.
It is hard to find a doctor that is open to alternative medicines – unfortunately – but I do know they are out there.
Since Naturopaths are regulated here (Canada)- I am pretty trusting of them… however, I do agree that it is wise to do double checks with my doctor and pharmacist!!
    Cheers,

    Hi there,
I have graves diseases – but it is effecting my eyes only. My thyroid is normal. However, the doctors tell me that most often within 2 years I may develop hyperthyroid..so needless to say, I am on no medications at this point… So, I feel that for me, it is worthwhile to pursue alternative therapies since my doctor says there is nothing she can help me with now. As a result, I am seeing a naturopath who is helping me tremendously.
I do take a small dose daily of selenium 50 mcg. I figure it can’t hurt. I read in Mary Shomon’s book that,
"Selenium is a critical element for thyroid health. Not only is it essential for the production of T4 and the conversion of T4 to T3, but it is also needed to help chelate heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury out of the bloodstream."

Apparently, there have also been some studies indicating that women with breast cancer have low selenium levels… so in my case (my mother died of breast cancer) I am motivated to give it a try.
I would ask your endo/pharmacist, if taking vitamins/minerals could effect how your thyroid medication works before using trying selenium though.
In my case, I have some time to experiment and my hope is that it will help ward off thyroid problems.
    Only time will tell
    Best wishes

Thanks so much for your replies.
Ski= that gives me some hope- It would be great to have a listing of all the centres doing research on autoimmune diseases…
But I am glad there is research going on out there… makes me feel there is some hope down the road.
I am curious about the idea of stopping the illness in its tracks in the early stages. I wonder how many people on this board have participated in any ongoing research.
    Cheers,

Thanks for the information on Flavay.. I am going to ask my naturopath about it.
I am taking flax seed ground up… plus liquid omega oils, Kaprex, acidophilus, and also some homeopathic drops, vitamin D, C and plenty of whey protein… My main benefit so far is that my blurry vision has cleared up. So I am very relieved.. I have only been doing this for 2 weeks.. so we will see how it goes..

Hi Thanks for your posting. Can you keep us updated on how flavay is working for you. I also have TED and I am interested in alternative therapies. I am currently going to a naturopathic doctor and I am taking lots of omega oil and an antinflammatory called Kaprex. So far my doctor has suggested nothing so at least I feel I am doing something now.

I believe I am similar to you Mammabear… I had a very bad flu in December and a week after recovering my eyes became swollen and GD began..
Such a weird experience because I believe that stresses caused it and then the flu was the final trigger.
I am trying not to worry about swine flu… my grandfather survived the Spanish flu in 1917 and is now 100 still telling the tale… however, his father wasn’t so lucky.
We can only help our medicine is better today… but sometimes I wonder  given, the primative treatments for TED… I honestly can not believe in this day and age we have nothing to help TED !!!
It can’t be rocket science. My mission is to ensure a cure is discovered for Graves so that my future grandchildren don’t have to go through this.
    Cheers!

A question… can you have any of these eye surgeries under local anathesia? Or is general the only way to go?
