My friend had a nodule on her thyroid in the past and had the surgery to partially remove her thyroid. She has mentioned that she takes Benadryl every night because she breaks out in hives without it and itches. I now wonder if these two are linked. She said she didn’t know why it happened but never really looked into it either……..

No it shouldn’t. It normally takes weeks for the true result to show.

For example: I got on a new dose. Was doing great. Then a few weeks later I had my levels tested around 3 weeks in because I was having problems. The levels said they were normal….. stayed on the dose. At week 6 I was hyper and bouncing off the walls! It’s supposed to take 6 weeks.

Wish I had the specifics for you but I have this too. My RAI was 3/16. My Endo told me there’d be an increased risk for RAI with Graves but at the time I wasn’t having any problems. In my case it seems to make my eyelids puffy and on a bad day with pressure my left eye sticks out a little more. On most days it’s not noticable though. I have an appt to get it checked out in July. Until then I just sleep with my head propped up to help with the swelling. I’ve also heard hot/cold compresses help but I haven’t used them yet.
Somewhere on the web I read the first 3 months you’re more likely to have problems. But I have also heard several other horror stories. For now I try to keep it positive. Not think about it much and do what I can with my makeup. The puffy eyelids usually go away by 9am or so. Hang in there! <img decoding=” title=”Smile” />

I have this trouble every day unless I’m laying down. It’s been happening for 2 weeks now. Did you ever figure out what it was? I’m desperate to get it resolved. My GP put me on an anxiety medicine to help. It’s calmed me but not fixed the struggle for a deep enough or sufficient breath.

Yeah the coffee thing is weird. All I can think of is that the coffee had that effect because I was pregnant at the time. Or maybe it set off a panic attack? Not sure but it was my first experience like that. The only thing that baffles me now is that things are still happening. I did go to see my GP yesterday for what feels like thyroid induced anxiety. My body has been through alot with my hormones being everywhere between RAI then hypo, pregnancy lost then recently going hyper all in a few months. So he put me on an anti anxiety med for now. It’s helped some but I’m still having trouble breathing. It’s like I can’t get a satisfactory breath unless I’m laying down doing nothing. Very frustrating because this has been going on for 2 weeks now. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

So basically the meds are reducing my anxiety about the breathing problem but not fixing it.

Ski wrote:Oh, one more quick comment ~ in the many decades RAI has been used, they have found that there is no such thing as giving "just enough," due to the antibody action in the body. ANY thyroid tissue that remains in the body can be made to overproduce by the antibodies, and it will also be slowly destroyed by the process, which results in some really odd spikes and valleys, instead of a nice, stable level of thyroid hormone. Fluctuations themselves can cause damage to the body (in addition to imbalance), and keep the patient from feeling at all well, so removing all of the thyroid tissue ends up resulting in a shorter path to health.

This is basically what my Dad told me tonight (who had his fully ablated). I had 20 millicuries and still have a functioning thyroid and am going through HELL trying to get on with my life. It almost makes me wish I had a clean slate like he did. He bounced right back after going hypo.

Well I can’t speak on the b.control but what I can say is that I was recently pregnant and during that time my symptoms were INSANE! I don’t just mean the regular ones either. My levels were pulled and I had gone hypo. It was the worst I’ve ever felt in my entirel life Lol! No joke. So what I’m saying here is that basically……….. I don’t see why it wouldn’t throw things off. Also my levothyroxine pamphelet says to let your Dr know if you’re taking this med + bc because it may have effects.
