I was told that 2 Brazil nuts would on avg give 150-250 of Selenium. So I eat 2 Brazil Nuts daily. I have for 3 months now. No regrets! I’ve only seen improvement and it was from day 1. I’m not the only one that has experienced this.

RAI was just on 3/16/11 so we are still adjusting my dose. Last time I went I was in range on my T3 & T4 but my TSH was .18 (just berely hyper). My Endo wanted to keep me on the same dose but due to the heart symptoms I was having agreed to lower me from 75 mcgs of Levothyroxine to 50 mcgs of Levothyroxine. Within a week after changing dose (not brand or maker) my hair started falling out. It’s been nonstop since.

I set up a follow up appt for as soon as I could (next Tuesday). I pray that it’ll be cut and dry and obvious that I’ve gone hypo. If I haven’t I just don’t know what to do!

I’m no Dr and I know it’s not popular to suggest suppliments (because it’s best to talk to your Dr) but I’ve actually found some relief in Brazil Nuts. Many people on the Facebook Graves board started taking Selenium suppliments which I refused to do because I am so afraid of messing things up w my levels (I’m just STARTING to be a normal functioning human again but still have problems too). Then a study came out about Brazil Nuts containing Selenium. The study was on people in an area that lacked Selenium in their diet (you should know this).

Either way I as well as several other people on the board started eating 2-3 Raw Brazil Nuts daily and have seen improvement. My symptoms have not gone away but the swelling is down by at least half! I as well as the other girls who’ve tried it on the board saw results the next day. This is no gimick. I make no promises but I am AMAZED at how much better my eyes look now!

I figure Brazil Nuts are just food. People eat them. How could it really harm anyone by eating 2-3 nuts a day? So I gave it a shot. My husband and I have pictures to prove the swelling has gone down. I know I’m still in the HOT phase but I’ll do whatever lessens the symptoms as I go along. My eye appt with a specialist is tomrorrow. I plan on bringing this up with him.

I don’t have any advice but I just wanted to reach out and let you know my sister was diagnosed with Graves around the age of 8 and she has lived a completely normal and healthy life since she found out and had it treated. I just wanted to tell you this because as a parent myself, I bet you’re very upset. But I believe he will do just fine once he gets leveled out. Best of luck to him <img decoding=” title=”Smile” />

SO sorry to hear about this! If you don’t mind me asking what method of treatment have you chosen? Meds, RAI or Surgery?

You must have been sent to me. Ha ha.

On a more serious side I’m having one of my worst days so far. I’ve had worse days with symptoms but today I’m feeling down because of my left eye. My eye is starting to protrude more and more and it’s now starting to become obvious. I’m also wearing my Holter monitor for my heart today and everyone is staring at me at work wondering WTH is wrong with me.
To top it off for some stupid reason I seem to be emotional and that’s just not like me.

So for today I’ll try to focus on your kind words. Because I’d rather bury myself in bed until this all passes.

I agree on the previous statement in double checking to make sure that it’s okay but here’s the article that I read:

    http://www.livestrong.com/article/39447 … -selenium/

(I hope that’s not a no no on this board. If so I apologize ahead of time). There are several other likely more reputable websites out there that talk about Selenium helping too. I was just bringing the nuts up because I won’t take the suppliment in fear that it’ll mess my thyroid up. Oddly enough eating a handful of nuts daily doesn’t bother me as much…… I know… I know… suppliment is suppliment. But it makes me feel better not popping another pill and knowning that someone out there just loves Brazil Nuts so they eat them daily

Interesting Krisann. Hmm I wonder what her doc would say-related to thyroid-or something else.

    Thanks for the reply!

You know that’s a good question. This girl hasn’t been back!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank God she feels fine but she’s obviously neglecting something that should really be checked regularly…..her remaining thyroid levels! She’s not on medicine because she said the took out the "right amount". Well I’m sure they did but it doesn’t mean you stop checking on it yearly to make sure your results aren’t or are normal. Lol!

I personally do not have the light sensitivity that you have. I do have what I think is mild TED and have an appt set up to get it checked out next month (dry eyes, red on some days, mostly pressure and unfortunately I have 1 eye that is slightly further out than the other. Luckily I’m able to "fool" people with my makeup still but who knows how long that will last. I hope and pray it doesn’t get worse but one never knows……..

Like I said I have an appt next month with an opthamologist. I looked around in TAMPA for one that specialized TED but no luck so in the meantime I’ll see this opthamologist and I like you am using the lubricants, eye drops etc. I have started wearing my glasses alot more than I used to in attempts to take it easy on my eyes. I wish I had some advice for you but unfortunately it seems like everyone’s response to ALL of this is completely different. I’m still hoping someone will hop on and give advice because you never know … with allll the people out there that have Graves. Someone on here is bound to have at least had a somewhat similar experience! GL!

So to follow up. Assuming that it may be related to my recent dose change or to the Levothyroxine (pamphelet says can cause hair loss in the beginning)…..

Does anyone know how long it’s normal? As far as I know I’m not hypo. I was just tested a few weeks ago at slightly hyper so he lowered my dose from 75mg’s to 50mg’s. I’d like to know approx how long it’s normal? Basically I don’t want to bring it up to my Dr until it’s reasonable to.
