Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers. My son did really well with the surgery. His calcium level dipped but slowly increased. Three weeks post op they increased his synthroid he is still sluggish but getting better. I am so happy with his team of doctors and the hospital. It has been a long haul but I am pleased with the choice we made and the outcome. One day at a time. Hopefully we can get regulated with meds feeling great!

I have had very similar feelings and an endo who in the course of a year seen her once….she always had us see her nurse. My son was diagnosed 18mos ago at 14. I switched his doctor and he is having surgery tomorrow! I was very concerned with RAI. I did research and feel much more comfortable with surgery. Not that I made the decision I had to let him make the choice. At sixteen I needed him to make an informed decision so we met with a surgical team and a nuclear medicine team. There are pros and cons to both he opted for surgery because he felt the RAI would take to long for positive results.
You really need to be comfortable with your doctor and on the same team they should not make you feel like you can’t ask questions or have concerns. You are in the drivers seat everyone else is along for the ride! Good luck to you.

When my son was diagnosed we had an endo that we hardly seen. I was not happy with the APRN she could not answer most of my questions and dismissed my sons symptoms. We stayed with that office for a year. At the time he seemed to be heading toward remission. Unfortunately that was not the case. We had to find another doctor. Now that we switched he is more comfortable and so am I. I can e-mail her whenever and she responds right away. When his thyroid inlarged and we were anxiously awaiting his blood work she actually left a message giving me her cell phone number. I hope you find someone who can make you feel more comfortable. It is so important, you deserve that. Good luck!

My sixteen year old sophomore in high school has been symptomatic even while his levels were in “normal range” . Although, I am not the one going through this I can see his struggle. He shares his feelings of anxiety, depression, fatigue, as well as focus issues. We have been told on several occasions that it may be something else, I am not buying it. Prior to the onset of this disease my son was fine.

I am so sorry for all that your going through…. My son was diagnosed on January 19,2011. It was a horrible experience. So I know where you are coming from he was 14. He did really well with meds for over a year. His levels T4 and TSH remained under control and it looked like he was going into remission, but unfortunately we are scheduling surgery very soon. I am relieved to get off the medication roller coaster. I am still extremely concerned but after all the research I feel that we have made the best choices for our son. I wish you the best of luck with your son. I am thankful to be where we are today….. the earlie stages are the hardest, but you will get through it…I promise.

Thanks….I read her links. They were very helpful. I am glad my son chose surgery. I am not comfortable with the RAI although I tried to keep an open mind about it. I was really worried he would prefer it over surgery. I feel so much better now that the decisions have been made and there is a plan. He will have his surgery at Yale by a thyroid surgeon who has been highly recommended.

Thank you for your response. The doctor does feel that removal is in his best interest. We have decided to have it surgically removed rather than RAI.

Another factor in all of this is when the time comes, and I am sure it will, is which method to use when his thyroid needs to be removed. I am not sure about either of our options and at this stage I really need to be informed so that we can make the best choice. He is a really good kid and I hate that this is so life altering for him. He has not been feeling well for so long, even when his levels were “in normal range”.

Thanks…. We are seeing the endo on thursday. The goiter is a new side effect for him. I am hoping that we can maintain his levels on tapazole for a while. He is really upset and does not want to remove his thyroid. Thankfully I was able to see the goiter, we were not due for blood work until July.
