@ChristinaDe, Please don’t apologize for your long quotes, I appreciate the information and it is nice to talk to someone who is going through it at almost the same time as I am. Most of the information I have read said women are more prone at a younger age to develop Graves Disease and I asked my endo and he said I will have Graves Disease all my life even though I had the RAI.

Wow, four years since you have had this I can’t imagine the rough road you have had for so long. I think me being a Type A personality and the person who is always taking care of everyone else it has been difficult for me to be on the other end and being the one being taken care of, quite frankly I stil cannot get use to it. Today is my first day back to work in over two months and I am not looking forward to the rat race.

Let me know how you are feeling when the hypo begins, I am curious as to the symptoms, I wish I had a list of symptoms at least I would know what to expect. Given my age, they say joint aches and pains, well I have that every day!!

@ChristinaDe, thanks for your story, I too have only been a patient for two months and I in hindsight I think this might have started in July or August but wrote it off as 56 years old, stressful job, etc., I too wonder how long it was really going on. I am glad everything went well for your surgery, how are you feeling now? Like I said my endo said I was still hyper but my numbers have gotten closer to where they should be but I am in the waiting game good and bad days. Keep in touch as to how you are progressing.

@ChristinaDe, I like your positive attitude. I was diagnosed on 12/6/12 and had RAI on 12/12/12. May I ask why you chose surgery? Was it a medical or personal decision? I have a wonderful endo and feel blessed that he was at the hospital every day, seven days a week while I was in the hospital for two weeks and answered any question that my husband or I had. A little history, I had lost about 30 lbs over the last four months and was beyond extremely fatigued but it took my family dragging me to the family doc who ran blood and immediately referred me to the endo. Imagine my shock when on my first office visit I was in AFib (didn’t even feel it)180 bpm and my endo immediately hospitalized me. It took them days to get my heart rate down, and meds to protect my heart prior to the RAI. They kept me in the hospital after the RAI because of the thyroid dump. Today my heart rate is usually in the 50’s and 60’s and I feel good but I have days where my heart rate is up 90’s-100’s and I don’t feel as well, my biggest complaint on those days is feeling woozy and anxious. I am still hyper and understand it takes awhile to go hypo. Also my endo says that it will be tricky for awhile to get my synthroid dose adjusted to where it needs to be. I too am looking for better days ahead and have vowed to start taking better care of myself, learning Yoga, exercising more, etc. Keep me posted on the changes your experiencing since we were diagnosed at close to the same time.

@vanillasky, I live in Cleveland if you have any questions let me know, the Cleveland Clinic campus is quite large. I have been there when both my parents were ill.

@echodwhispered, I felt fine a few days after my RAI and I agree with Kimberley, AZGravesGuy has documented his experience and I can only speak for myself, its February 1st and I am still hyper after my RAI on 12/12/12, levels have come down but still hyper, I have good days and bad days, I will go 4 days with heart rate 50-70’s and feel great than it will shoot up to 90-100’s for a few days, and I am hot, shaky, anxiety through the roof.

oh geez, you can tell I am new to this site, not reading further up to see that AZGravesGuy already had the RAI. I’ll learn. My doctor did not put me on ATD because I had slightly elevated liver enzymes which they think was due to the statin cholesterol medicine I had taken for years so he did not want to tax my liver, anyway, I am wondering how long from 12/12/12 it will take to have better days. I currently take Pradaxa 150 mg., Metropolol 25 mg., Vitamin D, Prilosec for the Pradaxa, Lisiniprol 5 mg., I just want my heart rate to settle down and some days I feel a little woozy, my endo will start meds once I level out and convert.

@AzGravesGuy, I am a Type A personality, I was down to 120 lbs., muscle weakness, extreme fatigue, muscle weakness, couldn’t sleep when I did go to bed, finally my family dragged me to the doctor who referred me to an endo because my numbers were off the charts, when I saw the endo I was in AFib, 180 bpm., he immediately hospitalized me. Long story short on 12/12/12 I had the RAI and my numbers have come down, no more hand tremors, muscles strength is coming back, but I still have the anxiety, the docs also feel its unrelated, but that isn’t helping me. Heart rate on a good day is 50-60’s on a bad day between 90-100’s. My endo and cardiologist feels that my heart will settle down after the thyroid settles down. Good Luck with you RAI.

@echowhispered, glad to hear things are okay right now, I agree with you I had my RAI on 12/12/12 and still have days where my heart rate goes up, but never over 115, but today it was in the 90-100’s and I just don’t feel well on days like today, when my heart rate is in the 50-60’s I feel much better. My doctor and cardiologist are of the opinion that it is all thyroid driven. I had an echocardigram when I was in the hospital and my heart was fine. The also have me on Pradaxa, a blood thinner, 150 mg. to prevent a blood clot.

@Kimberly, thanks for your feedback, it would be interesting to see how many people are Type A/Multi-Taskers, I am probably a little OCD too. I promised myself if its the last thing I do that I will start Beginners Yoga for relaxtion (hopefully, I won’t be thinking of all the things that need to be done and I can relax) I have already cut out all caffeine and switched to Organic tea which taste wonderful and is relaxing and I am not a big salt person but the endo said NO SALT, so I have been researching food alternatives for cooking, etc. I go back to work next week and I am very apprehensive since I am still having good and bad days but I have been off two months already.

Hi echowhispered, I live in Cleveland, Ohio and I had RAI on December 12, 2012, my family was after me because I had lost 20 lbs. and weighted 120 lbs., hand tremors, no strength in my arms and thighs, extremely fatigued I dragged myself to work every day and came home and laid down to sleep but couldn’t fall asleep or stay asleep, my family dragged me to the doctors (Type A personality, never missed work and I am now working towards taking Yoga, exercising and eating well) and within days I was in to see one of the top endocrinologists and when I was at his office I was in AFib with a heart rate of 180 and he immediately hospitalized me. It took days for them to get my heart rate down and as I stated I had RAI on December 12, 2012. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease and hyperthyroidism. I also had a cardiologist involved because of my heart rate. I spent almost two weeks in the hospital. I have to say I feel I have one of the best endocrinologists who calmed me down, reassured me everything will be okay, told me the exact course of action step by step and answered all my husband and my questions. As of today, January 31st my levels have come way down but I am still hyper but the hand tremors, extreme fatigue, muscle weakness have stopped. We are just waiting for me to convert. I get bloodwork every two to three weeks and see my endo every 4-6 weeks. My cardiologist and endo are of the opinion that my heart rate issues are thyroid driven and will be okay down the road. I take 25 mg. of Metoprolol every 12 hours only if my heart rate is over 70. I hope things get better as the days go by but I was not prepared for my life coming to a screaching halt. I am working to slow down and take care of myself.

Christine, if you come up to Cleveland, I will give you the information on my Doctor, his name is Dr. Z. Madhun and is one of the best Endocrinologist in the area. I have never had a more dedicated doctor in my life. He admitted me to the hospital the first visit I had with him because of the atrial fibrillation, I had blood drawn every morning at 4:00 A.M., and Dr. Madhun was at the hospital by 6:00 A.M. seven days a week, sat down and explained exactly what was going on and answered all the questions I had.

Your symptoms sound like how I was feeling, I had 30 lb. weight loss, when I got into my car I had to lift my legs to put them in the car, my fatigue was unbelievable, but I kept getting up every morning and going to work. I did not have thyroid storm but my thyroid was fighting my heart (in layman’s terms). The cardiologist did an echocardiogram and my heart was fine thank god but it was all related to the thyroid. Also, no sodium, I am being very careful because I am still hyperthyroid and my blood pressure and heart rate go up if I have sodium. It will take a little while for everything to settle down but I feel for you, from day to day I do not know what to expect. I have bought some books on Graves Disease and diet and exercise. I am trying to gain as much information as I can. My numbers were way out of whack when all this started. My Doctor also has me on Vitamin D and Magnesium OX 400 mg.

Hi Christina, I am in Cleveland which is still 5 hours a way. I was diagnosed on December 6th and had RAI on December 12th. I have a wonderful doctor who is one of the top 100 Endocrinologists. I had atrial fibrillation and elevated liver enzymes from statin cholesterol medicines, my endo wanted to do the RAI as soon as possible. My heart rate when I was admitted was 190-200 and they had a difficult time bringing it down and of course a cardiologist became involved. I a new at this so maybe we can compare issues.
