Hyper teacher I have long curly hair too so cutting it was not an option for me. Hopefully it will begin to settle. I used to be able to pull my hair at the ends and large lumps would just come away I brushed very gently from the ends up is small sections to try and prevent any pulling.

    Hi,

When I was on the blocking treatment I had fluid retention- though not to the stage your husband appears to be suffering. Does he have BP problems? I often had days where my face would swell very noticeably, couldn’t wear my wedding band and couldn’t get my shoes on.

When I mentioned to my new endo he decided to take me off the meds to see if it would go into remission – I lost 9 lbs in a week!

Like Bobbi said swelling like this should be investigated as its definitely oedema and it can be a result of several underlying conditions not necessarily hypothyroidism xx

    Hi,

In a short answer YES! When I was very hyper it started falling out in large hand fulls. I have to clean the drain at least twice while washing my hair- I have long hair so it looked twice as bad.

It settled for a while then after I had my TT it was falling out again. I was petrified I was going to loose my hair. It certainly did get finer and brittle but I am glad to say it has settled down now.

I had to try and convince myself that I would loose around less than half of that hair anyway so its wasn’t as bad as I what I was thinking- some days that train of thought worked…most days not. I kept my hair tied back and reduced the amount of times I washed it.

As Ski said it is due to hormonal imbalance and your body has been through a work out xxx

Hi Ski- thanks for the info… so very true regarding before and now. How long does it normally take for your metabolism to stabilise once they have your levels stable ( If you know what i mean <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” /> )

I have back pain too Like others joint pain also – my hands and feet are curled up in the morning but more recently my back has been in agony and in fact I just mentioned to my hubby that I think I will need to go to the doctor about it. Never thought for a moment a correlation to GD. However they way my levels have been I wouldn’t be surprised if its a combination of muscle wastage/ having babies and an injury at work all coming together now due to muscle weakness.

My GP suspected fibromyalgia after the TS. However, there was so much going on that I never went back and in fact I am wondering now if I should.

Keep us posted on how you get on xxx

Great to hear so many positive results

I think my eyes have went into the cold phase and have really settled down. The lids are no longer puffy – very little tearing/blurring unless I have been up half the night with the kids (thats normal I think <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” /> ) and although I have the bags they aren’t too bad and I hope they will settle down (no? ) xxx

    Ewmb,

I know when treating patients who have perhaps been bed ridden for a long period that they can only manage short spells of rehab (15 mins or so). I certainly feel that I have muscle wastage as I feel like my legs are going to seize up after climbing the stairs. I know realistically that it is going to take me around 9-12 months to get back to a "standard" level of fitness that normal people who don’t even exercise have. I have accepted that hard though it may be.

What do you do on the Wii? Looking for some ideas xxx

    Ewmb,

Thanks – yeah I should get one of those buttons  I am just feeling that I am regaining some control and I can’t believe how active I can be with the children now. I am able to focus ever more slightly than I did before the GD and I know that the brain fog will clear one day (I hope)!

Great to hear you are on the mend too. I read your other post about wii fit- lol us GD patients really have a hard time if we over do it eh? Will let you know how i get on xxx

    Billy,

I can completely appreciate what you are saying and I think George hit the nail on the head when he said that you have described everyone on this board at some stage in their life with GD.

I am starting to notice the effects of my mood swings prior to my op- I am out of the loop at work and I feel no one likes me GD created a monster in me and although I wasn’t particularly bad with my colleagues I realise now I was probably very sharp and quick at times – this isn’t my personality normally and now I feel very isolated. Also after such a long period of illness I don’t have any social life. My life is my kids but I have lost proper touch with most friends now. However, I am looking ahead to life where I know that my thyroid can’t take over anymore as I don’t have one It was the best decision I ever made in my life in regarding my health.

Hi, I haven’t posted on this board in ages and am ashamed but life has been hectic to say the least the last 6 months post op.

You sound very like myself in relation to your graves. I know how you feel about the weight gain. I had a TT in July and since then I have put on 2 stone  The only time I have been this heavy is when I was 9 months pregnant with my 10lb3oz first born! To be fair my TSH was 32.1 for a few months but thankfully before Christmas came down to 5.1, however the weight is still going on. I have been extra careful with my diet. I have found it hard to be more active in the sense of workouts, however am very active with my kids and am never off the go. I have decided to buy the Wii fit as I have heard from friends that you can set your own fitness programme as I know that at this moment my exercise tolerance is very low after such a long period of illness (I am on occupational therapist so am rehabing myself  ) that I would be shaking with fatigue if I were to attend the gym or a class. Could the Wii fit and balance board be an option for you?

I also wonder if thyroxine isn’t the med for me. I gained so much weight the last time I was on it with the blocking treatment and when my new endo took me off it I lost 9lbs in a week just from fluid alone. I have heard there is an alternative (does any one know the name?) but the GP’s in the UK are reluctant to prescribe due to funding. Has anyone else found problems with thyroxine? My hair is still falling out and I think that its mainly to do with the meds.

I feel such a benefit since my op that I can now think – there is health in store for me… I will feel well again one day. My attitude has changed from "this is me for life" to " I am going to get my life back". I know I will always have that weakness there but now I am eating for health and aiming toexercise for health. As Bobbie said our bodies have had a real workout with GD – if we had cancer (God forbid) we would cut ourselves more slack most likely.

I have ordered my wii Fit – so will let you know how I get on xxxxxx

Sharon glad you are on the mend! Hope it all settles down for you.

I have some great news (fingers crossed), but since my post my eyes seem to have settled down in the last week or so. They are not as swollen and they are watering or gritty anymore. This coincides with my hair loss tonight while washing my hair was significantly less. I am due for a TFT on the 21st of Dec. Why does it take 8 weeks for each change in thyroxine meds to reflect on the TFT? When you are on crabimazole it reflects monthly?

    Hi Ashley,

I had my thyroid removed in July – it is the best thing that has happened to me health wise. Have you been for a pre-assesment? If not yet try and write down any questions you have and ask the nurse or surgeon. If you are feeling exceptionally nervous in the build up or on the actual day as for a pre-op sedative to calm you down a little. I don’t want to go too deep into my situation as I think others stories may make you more anxious and you could have a completely different surgery and recovery. However, if you want to ask specific questions then I will answer honestly <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” /> <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />

Initially after the op it felt strange but then that is to be expected after major surgery. I am sure everyone will have a different experience from myself though. I was able to drink small sips and eat ice cream after 24 hours and I was on a soft diet for a few days. I stayed in hospital for 4 days. I wasn’t allowed to lift for 6 weeks (which was very hard as I have 2 small children) and had limited movement. However, everything started to fall into place after a little while and I started to feel the benefit of not having a thyroid. I was prescirbed thyroxine straight away – however be prepared for it to take sometime to kick in and also for them to get the right dose- I am still waiting (impatiently  ).

My scar is healing nicely some days it becomes more red than others, however it is a very small neat scar and to be honest the thought of a scar never bothered me as my sis had the op and I was able to witness how well she healed.

Feel free to ask any questions but as I said I don’t want to bombard you with info that perhaps wouldn’t be beneficial and mayhaps make you more anxious.

Trust your surgeon and aneathetist – this is a routine op for them! xxxxx

Thanks for the info I really appreciate it. I am praying that I don’t need any treatment and that once my bloods settle my eyes will too.

As a chronic asthmatic I have been on heavy doses of steroids in the past and I really don’t want to go there again as I hallucinate with them and feel awful… Plus I really don’t need any help with the weight gain at the moment.

With love and prayers for all of you. xxx
