in reply to: is there a light at the end of the tunnel. #1071020Thanks mammabear. Emotionally I am feeling better this morning. Thanks for you advice and concern. My hubby does have a good knowledge of the condition and my BIL (his brother) is a medic in Japan so he has helped explain etc… I guess its just family life sometimes and like you say living with a partner who is ill all the time doesn’t help the situation. I hope your symptoms have settled down and are feeling better

in reply to: Why I should I go to specialist? #1071009Hi Debbie,
Over in the UK (which I presume is similar in this instance to the states if that is where you are based) GP’s have what their title entails "general medical" knowledge. Whereas a specialist such as an endo is a consultant and therefore has a more in depth knowledge, practical experience and understanding of thyroidism. I remember initially after being diagnosed, I attempted to question my GP and she was honest in saying that she didn’t know too much about it as her job didn’t require a full in depth knowledge.
It is important to see an endo when you have this condition to ensure you are receiving regular blood tests and monitoring of your condition. They are also able to answer any queries or concerns you may have.
Hope that is of some help.

in reply to: Babies and GD #1071035Hi W,
Firstly, was your wee one not tested 5 days after birth to check for antibodies etc? Was he a big baby? My eldest was 10lb.3oz and at 3 months old weighed 24lbs. By the time he was a year old he was in clothes for a 3 year old. He had a huge appetite from birth. Now he has slowed down and is within a healthy BMI. I know, also that my brother who was a normal weight at birth had a massive appetite and infact still does! ” title=”Very Happy” /> It could be your little one is ready to have a growth spurt or that he is just a big eater. The behaviour – I’m not sure of he maybe is frustrated or is just chancing his arm ( as kids have a tendency to do)? Do you have health visitors over there where you could ask her professional opinion? I know you are scared to ask people or tell them how you are feeling emotionally and I am concerned that perhaps there is a element of PND lurking with you since his birth? On top of all that you are unwell and am sure other things going on in life. I’m not sure how things work over in the states but is there someone who could give you that wee bit extra support.
I remember after my youngest I thought I was going off my head – it was all thyroid related and thankfully my HV and GP recognised that.
I wish you could get your bloods done – its important.Take lots of care – love, hugs and prayers as always.

in reply to: Freakin’ out over new diagnosis #1071042Paloma,
Firstly, I am so sorry to hear about your mum – it must be a very trying and emotional time for you at the moment. Being diagnosed with GD can be overwhelming and there is a vast amount of information out there which can be very frightening. Most of the worse case scenarios are very rare – which I am sure some of the more experienced members of this forum will confirm.
There are many of us on here, who after diagnosis either researched on the internet of were given info by our endo, almost passed out with anxiety after reading up on GD. Its only natural for you to be worried about the unknown and with you loosing your mum I imagine that the anxiety is only hightened.
Deep breaths! You have your endo appointment in 2 weeks. Have you been started on medication? Many people live a reasonably normal life with GD, however, even those like myself who have had some issues recently are still managing to get through a day – all be it most days at the moment for me are hard.
You are right that there isn’t enough awareness out there with regards to thyroidism. Most people (including my work colleagues in the health professions) believe that its just weight loss/ gain. However, on here you will find the best group of people who will offer you so much support and advice.
Hang in there and lean on us. Please feel free to PM me.
Love and prayers

in reply to: I am seeking a new Endo… #1071083Mammabear, so sorry you had to deal with someone like that! One of the secretaries (who has since left ” title=”Very Happy” /> ) was like that and had a real chip on her shoulder. She was trying to put me down on the phone one day and when I went into the surgery after work in my uniform her face went scarlet especially as the GP had agreed with me! ” title=”Wink” /> I have found that a lot of the outpatient or GP secretaries think they are the doctor.
I don’t know how things work in the states but in the UK you could report her. Since when has a clinic ever run on time? Or perhaps that is just the norm with the NHS? Also over here they are supposed to give you around a 15 mins lapse and just take the next patient in the meantime.
It depends how you are feeling at the moment, however, if you feel that the endo was about the best yet then I would highlight to the endo about the secretarial staff. No one has the right to treat you like that especially someone working in the public sector.
Hope you are having a better day today (((((((((hug)))))

in reply to: Info on atypical nodules anyone? #1071066Hi,
Poor Cat! This may not be of much help but my friend (who has no diagnosis of thyroidism) had problems with nodules. At first she didn’t know what the lumps on her neck were. She had them drained 3 times. On the 2nd occassion immediately after they drained them they filled up again. The ENT consultant then decided that she should have half her thyroid removed because of the continuous problems with them. As she had no thyroid issues she didn’t need thyroxine and has been fine.
I am sure that many people have the nodules drained and they are fine without requiring surgery.
I’m not sure about no anaesthetic though – don’t know if I would like that!

in reply to: surgeon consultation – very nervous! #1071117Thanks so much for your support! Emily you basically just said what I said to my mum today. I am really nervous but I need to make an attempt to start feeling well again. I really feel like backing out but keep reminding myself about the TS and that could happen again so YES I just need to ask God and the Blessed Mother to hold my hands and keep me strong!

HI Princes,
Firstly, welcome. You seem to have had a rough time of it but thankfully now you are receiving proper care.
I am heading out to take my little one to nursery so its a quick reply I’m afraid but I can assure that you will receive a lot of support on here.
If your BP is high/ high pulse etc you will experience dizziness – I have a community job and at one stage I really thought I was going to be reported for drinking and driving as I often got to my car door then would stumble to the side – it was very scary but I knew that it was thyroid related and it settled down after I was on the meds for a while..hopefully that will happen for you too.
Keep posting and in the meanwhile take it easy,.

in reply to: just diagnosed in UK #1071261Hi Jeanette,
Welcome! I am from Scotland too! Nice to know another fellow Scot is on board – although sorry thats its because of your recent diagnosis.
I have had contact with the Bristish thyroid foundation (or something similar) but they don’t have a forum so I didn’t find it to be of any use. I have, however, found the people on here to be my life line the last few months. I don’t think you will find any better.

in reply to: uptake reaction…PEASE READ…. #1071270Sorry I can’t be of any help but just wanted to say I am thinking of you and hope it settles soon xxx
Hi Emily,
Just wondering if it feels as though your muscles and bones are shaking or just a general shakiness inside? I know when I have panic attacks I feel as though there is someone outside with a powerful digger or like an earthquake.
However, a few years back after my diagnosis I used to waken with a feeling as though all my muscles and bones were vibrating and like you I asked my hubby and he said that he couldn’t feel anything. It turned out to be chronic fatigue with me and sometimes I still get it and I know that I need to slow down.
