You are most likely going to have a scan of your thyroid to see if there are any nodules and whether the pattern that occurs is concurrent with Graves or not. You will get a shot with a radioactive tracer, can’t remember the name. It’s just so the thyroid will take it up and show a pattern during the scan. There isn’t any worry about staying away from people after this as there is when you have Radio Active Iodine treatment. Have you already had an uptake test? That’s the one that you have after you swallow a small capsule with radioactivity and they take a scan of your thyroid sitting up at 6 hours and 24 hours.

in reply to: Weigh-in (just for fun) #1068705Lacie,
Yes I am feeling some better. Something is working, I hope it’s the RAI over the tapazole. Yesterday I registered a pulse of 68 at one point. That’s the lowest I can remember in years. Sorry about the wait for your numbers. It can be so frustrating. Did you put in writing that the doctor can leave you a message? Some don’t want to do that if they don’t have permission. I guess they are worried about scaring people with new information but you’d think at this point that we are used to tsh, T-4 etc……. Maybe the mail will bring good things.ewmb

Did you get your numbers yet? Maybe I missed it on another post.ewmb
in reply to: Would you switch docs? #1068523Maybe you could talk with your insurance provider to see if they would intervene on your behalf to switch to another doctor on their list. I’d call back to the office that had appointments in January that time and tell them your situation. New patient appointments are sometimes not as available as ones for those who are already diagnosed. You might let them know that you’d be willing to come to talk with the new doctor during his office time not seeing patient time to discuss whether or not he could help you out. Ask if he does e-mail consults. Call your current office back and tell them you need to switch your next appointment to the first thing in the morning and at least try and get some answers before you might be switching. I’ve had your experience of waiting and it’s really awful especially when you don’t feel well. Maybe you could have your GP call the new endo’s office. They can sometimes get appointments faster than lay people.

in reply to: Need Help!! #1068501Michael,
It is quite possible that a lot of these feelings are from the Graves. Call her doctor now and see if you can get her in today to at least talk. In my worst time I cried and cried every day especially right at the beginning. It felt so suffocating to not know what was happening and how long it would take to get out of the woods. There are people on this board who have had success with anxiety medications. I didn’t have to go that route but would have if necessary to find some peace. My medications started to work in a few months and I muddled through. It is hard and scary. We will be thinking about you and your wife. Please let us know what happens. When she is ready later reading some of the past posts on this board may help her not feel so alone.ewmb
in reply to: Would you switch docs? #1068519If you haven’t got to get another referral to change and there is someone else nearby I’d start asking around to see if the other doctors see Graves patients etc.. You might be able to find some ratings from patients online. I do take these with a grain of salt as those who are upset like you are are likely to post negative things only but they may be right! Seems like this doctor isn’t too interested in helping patients or his office staff is not very good. The next doctor should be able to get your records faster for you but you have a right to get them yourself. If you have the time to go and stand there and wait for them to print them off for you that might do it. Depending on their policy and how many pages it will be you might have to pay for the copying. Hope you get things straightened out.

in reply to: Grand mal seizure #1068527Deb,
I don’t know if it’s related to the Graves. Have you had an EEG with a seizure recorded so they know where your’s are coming from? My daughter has epilepsy and has never been on medication as her’s come to far apart for us to be putting her through the unpleasantness of the drugs. Her’s are left frontal temperal and apparently knowing where they originate can help know whether an episode is more likely to be epilepsy or something else. My daughter also has tremors that her neurologist says aren’t seizures but they do like that. I’d get it checked out if you can. Losing time or spacing out can be a seizure in some people.ewmb
in reply to: Weigh-in (just for fun) #1068698I lost a little weight at the beginning of my Graves. The doctor caught that. Then when I was on ATDs I too started to gain weight and put on quite a bit. I felt like my switch for hungry was set at high and then my body decided to hold on to all of it as my levels went closer to normal and then hypo. After I was hypo on the meds I couldn’t get it to come off. Am 15 weeks out from RAI now and hoping that I’m at least not going to gain anymore right now. We’ll see when I become hypo and then euthyroid what happens to the pounds.

in reply to: GD and Genetics…do we really know yet? #1068539Rhonda,
I don’t know for sure but it seems like a lot of people including me have thyroid issues in their family history. My dad has Graves, my Mom Hashimotos, cousins etc. with other and same issues. I’ll be interested to hear what the facilitators know.ewmb
in reply to: Weigh-in (just for fun) #1068695Sounds like everyone is working hard. My period came and went and two pounds of water with it. I am getting over a sinus infection so that has made me drink more. We have company too so am thinking of what to make for dinner that is good but not too much.
Lacie- I hope your lab results are showing a trend. My heart rate has been staying down in the mornings. I really hope that will stay. I like 85 much better than what I was getting when I woke up. My BP systolic number has been a little high but I am thinking that might be the infection and antibiotic that I am on. Just finished that last night so we’ll see today if it’s better.
Kimberly- I’ve forgotten; are you on ATDs or have you had RAI or TT?
Keep thinking positively everyone.

Joseph,
Where do you live? That might give some of the people who know about what to do to help you out better information. Sorry to know that you are struggling. This is the place to ask anything and everything about graves. The first few weeks of the diagnosis can be rough mentally. Knowledge about your disease will make things easier to handle. If you have the time and patience try and read some of the old posts.ewmb
in reply to: Weigh-in (just for fun) #1068690Lacie,
I’m sorry that you’re feeling so rotten. Been there done that with this RAI healing that takes so much time. The atd’s might really help you through this rough patch. When I was really hyper I really felt my period coming. I read in a book that I have that you can be really affected by estrogen changes in Graves. I kept telling all my doctor’s that over the last two years but they couldn’t tell me why. It has something to do with thyroid binding globulin which is produced in your liver and can be affected by estrogens. Since you are like me and at that age when menopause is coming it could be why you feel so bad right now. I was like that last week and when my period came, even though it was short- don’t know if that’ still hyper or my age- I felt a lot better.Hope the peanut butter helps. Try taking some more calcium during this time too. There is a new book out about menopause and thyroid issues. I saw an ad about it,can’t remember the title. Might be interesting to read.

in reply to: How do I cope with Graves’ Disease? #1068836Kit,
Glad to know that the coconut worked for you. I wish I knew why it worked but I am just grateful that it does. How are the job preparations going?ewmb
in reply to: Weigh-in (just for fun) #1068688Lacie,
Maybe you are craving PB. When I was very hyper I ate peanuts everyday. I had read that it is one of the foods that can block something with too much thyroid hormone. Hope they can leave you a message tomorrow anyway on your results. It is hard to wait.ewmb
in reply to: Surgery done!! #1068581Glad to know that you came through ok. Now the waiting is the hard part. I am waiting for RAI to take effect. I know you will be well again soon.
