I read your post and I am curious as to the dose of PTU that you took for 10yrs. Did it ever change for you? Or, did you find that right amount before your remission? When you went into remission on PTU, did you go hypo?

Sorry for all the questions, just curious?
Thanks~

Thanks for your response.
It is wonderful to have Dr. for a hubby, but hubby-Doc’s do best when they are not involved with the family care. Usually I do go see other Dr.(that he likes:) It has been much easier with him assisting with my thyroid care, though. But, he still thinks of me like any other patient. Doesn’t always understand what I going through with the symptoms, but is very rational in thought and future expectation of the disease..lol
It is good:)

Wow, those are great posts. As my boys would say, "you Rock".
My endo said I could slowing wean off the PTU. My situation is different b/c my hubby is a Dr. and he orders my blood work right in his office. So, my Endo and him have discussed my case and the last adjustment they both thought I was ready for. In fact, my endo said to come all the way off PTU, my hubby said NO. Looking back, I should have known that 50mg of PTU is not bad at all and maybe stayed another 6 months on that dose, or until I saw my labs make a significant change.

I’m really trying to make an effort to enjoy life, but sometimes it’s tough to see so positive when my symptoms are so bad:( When I was level on PTU I felt good and "normal"…just have to breath through this one.

Thanks for responding to my vent. So glad I found this place

Thanks ya’ll. I had some acupuncture done today which helps me with the heart palp. & anxiety. I eat good. I have always taken good care of my body. I don’t take herbs….not really in to that. But, vitamins and minerals I enjoy. I have 3 children, and just stay so darn busy..Hope that I can achieve remission one day.

Last night was a rough night to "fall asleep". Seems like once I’m asleep, I’m fine. But last night was frustrating b/c I could feel my thyroid like shake or jump or something like that. It almost causes me to jump out of my bed or try to catch my breath. It’s so annoying…very frustrating part of Graves that drives me crazy:)

Let me just tell you that stress has a very very powerful effect on your body. Stress alone can cause all the symptoms that you mentioned in your post. BUT, you should still get your Dr. and have labs redone. Just to make sure it nothing else. If everything is okay, then I would discuss temporary options for stress, such as anti-depressants (short term:).

On another note…I don’t know if you have a strong support system at home or not, but counseling may be a wonderful thing for you. What’s on the inside needs to come out. You may find that counseling through all these issues may bring some peace of mind, relief, and hope for you. Also, start taking care of yourself TODAY:) Call and make an appt. with your Dr. and start from there. If their is a hobby and activity that you enjoy doing…maybe start doing that a couple times a week. Stay encouraged..hope is on the horizon.

I totally agree with the last post. GO GO GO to the ER right away! I had a thyroid storm and I almost had a heart attack.
I delayed the trip for days before the storm..b/c I thought my symptoms were in my head. I had ALL the symptoms you mentioned in your post. Go girl!

Most hospitals have "charity funds". AFTER you get home from the ER and in a couple weeks, call the hospital and ask to speak to someone who is in charge of the charity fund. They are the person that will help guide you and hopefully get you covered.

Until then, get to the ER.

Wow…you certainly have been through a lot of trauma and stress. My goodness…Very sorry to hear the series of events that you have been through. I don’t understand what all that would be like because I have not been through some of those events, but just losing a child alone..I can’t imagine.
When is the last time you had labs done?
I would encourage you to see your Dr., your breathlessness could be coming from a number of things…
Also, upset stomach is very common with stress..
Call your dr.

Hang in there and try to trust God in all of this. He is a ever present help in time of need. Jer.29:11

Lisa,

Wow..bless your heart. You had to wait 2 1/2 months to start ATD’s. It’s no wonder you are on Beta-Blockers. Just keep in tune with any changes in your heartrate as the PTU kicks in. I responded very quickly to it and it was only a matter of a couple weeks and I was weaning off the BB’s.
Hang in there on working out. Start very lightly on the ellipitcal trainer. That can get your heartrate up very quickly. I, too, am very competitive, too. Ran competitive 10K’s regularly. In fact I was laughing the other day b/c I signed up to walk a 10K….never in a million yrs. would I have thought I’d walk..BUT, Graves has been a blessing to me in many ways. How? Well, I have always been super fit, 3 kids, full-time working mom, husband who is a Dr…busy schedule…..and did not take care of myself and family the best way that I could. I thought I was…but God showed me through all of this that it is okay to slow down…not be involved in so many darn things….that walking burns more fat(it’s true…!!)lol, and that I finally have more family time instead of busy time. Graves is not fun…but it has taught me valuable lessons. In many ways I thank God that He used this to teach me these lessons.

During this season of slow down for you, remember that all of this is just a SEASON. It will not last forever…although it probably feels that way to you. hang in there….this time next year…you could be back to "normal" and running a fast as you ever have:). Give your body time to heal and recover from the stress of the Graves. You will be able to do the things you love again…in time:)

Also, forgot to mention the beta-blocker. I was on a beta-blocker for 2 weeks…then my pulse was running very low..40-50’s…my husband is a doctor and he would check on me throughout the day. He said that it was making my heart rate tooo slow. So, I SLOWLY..came off the BB’s. Make sure you talk with your doctor before coming off beta-blockers completely. You have to be slowly weaned.

If I read your post right, the labs you posted are from Jan. Do you have any recent labs? If you have been on the meds for 6-8 weeks, you will probably have a good change if you are very consistent with taking your PTU.

I also was an avid runner when I was DX. I’m 30 and I was DX lasted year…right after I got done running (legs turned to lead..could not move them) and went into thyroid storm. Very scary. I had to quite running for 6 months which was really hard for on me b/c I ran like 30 miles a week. BUT, I started walking 1-2 miles and doing light abs, and weights. Very lightly. Honestly, I never have been able to run like I used too.., still trying for remission on PTU and have had flucuations that have influenced this. Be encouraged. When my labs are in range, I feel great and have long walks (3-5miles) and can do lights weight to build muscle. In fact, I think I look better now with less cardio and more weights..lol

Also, I have a friend that has Graves and he did the RAI and runs marathons and is an Iron Man…….

Kimberly,
The first time he took me off, my Tsh was 6.8 something-I was very hypo, so he just gave it a shot I guess. The crazy thing about all of this for me was that I felt me best on 50mg of PTU-REGRET…coming down!!! That bottomed me out
I’m waiting to hear back from my endo about all of this. Currently, I taking the 200mg of PTU.
