in reply to: Hyper after RAI #1067174

    Thanks.

I have not heard back from my Endo yet as to what the plan is. My gut says to ride this hyper thing out (especially since I’m 6 weeks post). I would hate to go through the PTU thing again..building it up in my system…then crash with hypo.

Today was a little better. I find that not thinking about it too much keeps me from worrying and stressing over the hyper symptoms. Gosh..I was feeling sooooo good after RAI and my labs were normal –till 4 weeks when I slightly hyper…..then got even more hyper at 6 weeks. Maybe this is the wall I’m hitting.

    Anyway, thanks for the help:)

6 weeks post RAI and I’m hyper. I totally thought I was hypo… My TSH was 0.012 and my T4 is 12.8-both high. I called my Endo’s office and left a message. SO, what do you guys think? Will I have to go back on PTU or can I ride this thing out? Anyone go hyper? If so…did you go hypo quickly?

If you have to go back on ATD’s….will I be okay on PTU..does my chances of a reaction get higher?

    thanks Ski.

I’m planning on getting my labs done tomorrow.

Good thing to know about the 6 week mark.

I’ve noticed I’m flumbling with my words. This morning I asked my family what they wanted for dinner (meant breakfast) and did not realize I said that till my hubby told me. Kind-of weird to have to think about talking right…ha ha

    Okay..I feel like CRAP!:(

I have felt great up until about 5 days ago. I’m soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tired..my eyes fell weak…I have NO energy. I feel like I need to cry… I have NEVER felt this way. Family life is great…don’t understand. I’m NOT a cryer…

I’m 6 weeks post RAI. Had labs done around 4 weeks..and my TSH was 0.16 and T4 was normal….what could be going on?

    Any suggestions?????

P.S-Still glad I had ablation….just trying ot figure this out.

in reply to: Leg cramps?? #1067504

I got leg cramps when I went hypo on PTU. Once my PTU dose was lowered, it went away.

    Check with you doctor <img decoding=” title=”Wink” />

Glad that you are feeling fine:)

I’m almost 4 weeks post and I’m feeling good. I have not gained a pound! (But-I have been running a little and walking a bunch)

The past 3-4 days I have been very tired. But, when it’s time for bed…I can’t seem to fall asleep. I think the reason is b/c I quit drinking caffinated drinks when I was hyper…and picked up the habit again 2 weeks ago b/c I do not have the heart palpitations anymore…So, I think my sleep issues are related to my new found pleasure of drinking good coffee..lol

I had my first labs done this afternoon and will not get my results till tomorrow. I have a feeling that I’m starting to head down the road of hypo…just have the sluggish feeling coming on…especially the past couple days.

My goiter is starting to shrink, too..which is great. Much easier to breathe laying down.

All in all I’m SOOOOOO glad I had RAI. It is so nice to not have to eat right away in the morning (which I had to do when I was hyper), drink regular coffee, go running, and not feel like I’m choking when I get my heart rate up.

The only negative things that I have had are: dry hair and skin. My eyes feel a little gritty..red..and dry. But, things will get better over time..I know it:)

I’m sure you will be fine!!! No worrries:)

You have some understandable concerns and good questions. You have come to the the right place, as I’m sure you will get many responses with good info.

As for me personally, my dose of RAI was 15. My uptake was 85%. I tried remission for two years on ADT’s…and that was way too much drama for me. I had to come off ADT’s for 3 1/2 weeks prior to my uptake. My labs ended up in normal range..but my uptake was seriously high (as your daughter’s). My ultrasound showed solid and cystic nodules ALL over the thyroid and a huge goiter. My goiter is so large that you can actually see it on my neck. I have NO eye part of Graves.

My RAI went great. My goiter did swell up really bad…but I felt fine. It is starting to go down…I’m almost 3 weeks post.

25 is a high dose for RAI….but not crazy high. Thyroid cancer patients receive A LOT more than that. I’m sure your daughter will be fine.

I DO NOT regret RAI….and went running today for the first time and felt COMPLETLY normal:) Glad I made the decision to go through with it.

    Hey Liz,

Yeah..that medication can make you crazy..lol

I did have some "dumping" symptoms. But..they are nothing like being hyper if that makes sense. I have felt that all my symptoms are very managable…which is a good feeling. My goiter has swelled up very large….but it’s just mad about the RAI:) The goiter thinks I like him….little does he know he will srival up and die….LOLOLOLOL

Hang in there…we have to give this months…

From what I understand, it is common to go on the anti-thyroid drug after ablation…just for a short period of time until you start to go hypo.(helps keep you level) It could take 1-3 more months to see a shift in your labs. That is totally normal. Everyone is very different. Some go hypo as soon as 4 weeks…and others sometime up to a year.

You T4 looks good…..if it was way up there I would be like "give me the anti-thyroids…<img decoding=” title=”Smile” />"

When my t4 is really high…that’s when my symptoms are out the roof….I have had 0.001 tsh and normal T4 and managed through it…although it was not too fun….Go with what you Dr. suggests. You Endo does sound a little overloaded…but that is up to you if you want to switch.

    I don’t know too much….hope I helped.

    Did they check your T4?

I would encourage you to find a doctor that is understanding. Sounds like you have not found that yet. I would call your Dr. tomorrow and ask for a referrel to an Endo. Hang in there…you will get some answers. Keep doing your foot work and don’t give up.

This is a good place to be to start finding some answers.

I also wanted to mention that if you had thyroid cancer that it would most likely show up in your Radio Uptake Scan. On top of that..the surgeon would have probably found it during the TT…especially if it is the size of a pea (that is a big size in regards to cancer).

My Endo told me that the Scan is the tell all for the state of the thyroid.

My ultrasound showed solid and cystic nodules ALL over the thyroid along with a goiter and a totally diseased state. My scan told even more of this story. It’s like the ultrasound is black and white…and the scan is color. <img decoding=” title=”Wink” /> Sometimes you can see cancer in a ultrasound..but the uptake is the big scan that will give your Dr. all the info they need.

Try to relax and breathe…you will get through all of this.

Interesting that you said that Bobbi.

When I was at the Dr.’s the other day I asked her what my heart sounded like and if I was having heart palpations. She said that it sounded fine..and my heart moniter (which I use when I get panicky) has been in healthy normal ranges. So, I think that you are right in the sensations thing. It could be that I’m just noticing it beat.

As of today..I still have it a little. More at night. My neck is VERY sore and even sore to touch. AND my ears are ringing like crazy…with like a pressure.

I’m still very early post RAI..so I’m just going to hang in there:)

I was thinking the same thing…scar tissue.

As always..talk with you GP. That will give you the peace of mind you are looking for.

I would encourage you not to "google" anything…you will get tons and tons of "DX’s". Don’t let you imagination go there. I understand what that it like….been up and down that road.
You are recovery from a major surgery. Give yourself a year to let your body catch up…don’t let your mind run down a road that’s not there. Negative emotions and feelings are toxic enough. Stay postive and remember that you ARE on the road to healing. <img decoding=” title=”Smile” />

I had my RAI 7 days ago…I also had to go 3-4 weeks without meds. Although that actually went really well..lol

BUT…I’m having a lot of symptoms this week. I don’t feel better right now..in fact I feel worse.

On the POSITIVE side…I KNOW that I will get better over time. I know that I will never have to go through what I’ve been through. I feel like I’m not walking on quick sand anymore…I’m just walking in a desert now…wanting to find some water…hahahahahhahaha

Hang in there…you will get through it. We all are getting through it or already have.

Get lots of sleep and drink TONS of fluids;)
