in reply to: small weight gain..7 months port RAI #1065232
well everyone..I found out this morning that I’m HYPER!! I thought I was hypo because of the small weight gain? Now, I have to reduce: to 75mcg. ( Maybe you are right SKi…maybe my muscles are coming back. Everyone says that I look great and much more healthier…but now I feel fat even though I know I’m not. Just wish I could "pop" by belly and let all this water go away..That is what it feels like.
in reply to: Going hyper after stable levels on synthroid #1065192I just posted on here a couple days ago about gaining a few lbs. I’m 7 months post RAI. I was thinking this past week that I was starting to go hypo and needing my synthyroid raised up….but ironically I found out this morning that I’m hyper…LOL I would have put money on me being hypo…instead it’s the other way around. I’m currently taking 88mcg…and will reduce it to 75mcg. Now…I’m just trying to figure where the weight is coming from? Under 1500 cals a day and working out…maybe…it is muscle?
Glad you are feeling better. Hyper isn’t nearly as bad after RAI..I barely notice it.
I guess are thyroids are still dying….
in reply to: small weight gain..7 months port RAI #1065227Thanks Ski & Kimberly,
That is interesting, Kimberly~
I got my labs done today. I should know tomorrow morning if I’m in normal range.
Most of my weight is literally sitting in my lower abdomen, it’s like a water balloon..lol
I have restricted my calories to 1500 a day…stilling creeping up on the scale.
Maybe I will have some answers tomorrow:)
in reply to: 5 months post-RAI…feel good but jittery pulse #1065610thanks. I never thought about my fluid intake..good point.
in reply to: newby and questions about methimazole #1066071There is no natural method for healing of Graves. A positive attitude and good spirit WILL help you tremendously, though. If you keep that up, healing can come faster;)
If you find healing through the process your going through (natural), then you may never have actually had Graves. It you have a true DX of Graves, then you have only a couple choices of care (which do not include what would be natural). You will not succeed with the natural approach with Graves. In fact you can put yourself in SERIOUS danger if you continue the path you have been on.
I know b/c I went through a stage with Graves where I truly was in denial about it. I, too, thought I could conquer it with the natural method. So, much that I had a SECOND thyroid storm b/c I REFUSED to take ADT’s. I even went to a natural Doc…and he did blood tests that never related to Graves. Waste of money;( I thought that I could fix the issue with good food, lots of sleep, positive thoughts…I never really understood graves until I did tons and tons of research.
Really take the time to understand what your dealing with. For me, going through a thyroid storm was the most horrible time of my life. If you really have Graves, and you continue the natural method…you may end up with a thyroid storm. And I promise you that you will regret so much not taking the advice of a understanding Endo who will give you some options of care. Had I listened to my Endo the first time, I would NEVER have had a thyroid storm the second time. My lack of understanding put my life at risk. I had no clue the Graves was as serious as it is and that it needs immediate care.I was told IMMEDIATELY by my Endo to have my thyroid ablated. That totally freaked me out….the only other option of choices for me was trying for a remission on ADT’s. That was the most natural method for me at the time. I tried for 2 years and could not achieve remission. My goiter grew so large that it came out from my neck. I then choose RAI….and I’m on replacement now.
Looking back…I had very similar desires like you.
I continue a very healthy lifestyle: positive, eating good, exercise, etc. etc. I do take my replacement hormone every morning. I feel great and I’m so happy that I can now focus my energy on things I more interested in…lolBe careful with the path your on….it could cause serious problems. Hope you find the care that you need.
in reply to: Symptoms of too much replacement #1066334I had my labs done and it turned out that I was hyper. So, I’m now taking 88mcg of Levo. It has been a week now and I feel much better, actually very tired. But, maybe that is normal.
in reply to: Newly diagnosed, need to work out #1066322When I read your post, it reminded me so much of myself when I was first DX with Graves.
I was 29. I’m now 32. I was an avid runner and did aerobics and weights. I lost around 10 lbs. or so and was too skinny with the Graves. My Endo said that I could run and lift weights as long as it was mild. Nothing that was insane, like "bootcamp" workouts..lol
From my understanding about the workout issue is that you can continue to do what you have always done-just not more. It’s kind-of like pregnancy. If you worked out before pregnancy, the Dr. is okay with you working out during. If you did not, then starting a workout routine during that time would not be wise because your body is not used to it. (other than walking easy, etc.)
The MOST important thing is to listen to your body. If you don’t feel good working out, then STOP immediately. I have many memories of working out with Graves (prior to RAI), that I had a "weird" feeling and MADE myself stop. Be honest to your body during this process.
I had RAI in November. It was a good experinece for me. I now workout as if I never had Graves. Sometimes I actually forget I went through the whole ordeal.
Listen to your body. Hang in there…you will get through this. Take your meds. on time and take good care of yourself. This is a wonderful site!!! EEveryone is very supportive and informitive.
in reply to: Scared and Frustrated #1066630I see your point to having the surgery. You don’t have to wait the 2-6 months to go hypo then on replacement, as you would with RAI. I guess it would quicken the process for you so you can start a family:) I already have 3 boys, so I never had to think about that. I’m on the other side and don’t desire anymore…hahahaha
One thing to think about though. (Not trying to change your mind) If you are having the surgery to hopefully speed up the process of future pregnancy, keep in mind that it may not. When you are hyper, it can be very difficult to get pregnant. It is possible, but very difficult. Also, the same for hypo. When your body conceives it requires a perfect combination of factors: hormones, temperture, normal ovulation (which does not happen at times with thyroid issues), etc.
Once you have the surgery, you will start your replacement. It may take months for your body to adjust to a normal state. Potentially…the same amount of time that if would have with RAI. I guess you just have to do the math. If you got pregnant 2 months earlier than you would if you had RAI…is it worth surgery? If it is worth it to you, then go for it.
Either way, you are finally on your way to feeling better. I hope that you find the right replacement dose and move on with life and have those babies:) keep us posted!
in reply to: Scared and Frustrated #1066628I’m 31 and had RAI in Nov. All and all I had a really good experince. I, too, thought about surgery, but I’m soooo glad I did not go that route. I personally thought the risks were much greater having surgery. The Surgeon I met with said that he would not want me to go that route either. I have had some issues with the eyes, but not severe. You would not know that I have Graves by looking at them. My eyes look much better than when I first got DX.
Good luck with your decision! ” title=”Wink” />
in reply to: Went hypo..on levoxyl..when does it kick in? #1066731Sounds quite possible that you could be making that turning point. That is great your having labs done on Tuesday. I always made sure to get my T4 tested as well as my TSH and looked more at my T4 than my TSh. My T4 when I went hypo was 2.2-below the normal range. That was my green light for replacement.
If your labs do not turn out to show hypothyroidism, don’t be discouraged. I thought I was hypo around 6 weeks and I was not. So, don’t worry if your labs don’t reflect how you are feeling. (Altough I’m crossing my fingers for you that you are-so you can move on)
I glad my story encouraged you. Most people when they feel better and move on with replacement don’t post much on here. I figured I would stay around a little just to encourage people that it is not always a bad experience:)
Still feeling great today. No weight gain. Great heartrate. Sleeping solid. No hairloss, etc. ” title=”Wink” />
As for your other questions, I’m sure the facilitators on this site will have some really good answers.
in reply to: Scared, frustrated could use help #1066540Has she been tested for PPD? (Post-partum depression) I had a relative who had PPD and she did not discover it till the baby was a toddler. She had some blood work done and her serotonin levels were very low. Just a thought.
As for the graves, Kimberly made some really good suggestions.
Really sorry you are going through this. I’m sure it is difficult to watch. Hang in there.
in reply to: Went hypo..on levoxyl..when does it kick in? #1066727Susan,
You will find everyone’s experience very different on this forum. Stick to how YOU are feeling when your levels start to change. Don’t let me or anyone else determine how you are supposed to feel or not validate how you feel at a certian level. Everyone is different. Take good care and I hope that you have a great experience.
in reply to: Went hypo..on levoxyl..when does it kick in? #1066724That would work, too. I disagree with your Endo about labs not changing much week to week. Although they probably will not change much between 4-8 weeks post RAI…beware of weeks 8-12….that is when a majority of people start seeing changes. At least you can go in and get the labs if you want. Just do what YOU feel like you need to do. The Endo and the Nurse are not going through what your going through. I got a little hot with my Endo’s nurse at the end….sometimes you have to be assertive. For me..the more knowledge I gained about this entire process the more I knew what I wanted done. Had I not listened to my instinct, I would still be hypo as I’m typing this with weeks to go before my Endo wanted my labs done.
I have had a WONDEFUL experience with this RAI process. Their were a few tough weeks..but I barely remember it now. I seriously credit my experience with getting my labs done every week between 7-9 post RAI. It totoally saved me from becoming extremly hypo.
My replacement has not given me any problems. I feel GREAT!!!! The most "normal" I have EVER felt in my life.Stay PROACTIVE!!! ” title=”Wink” />
in reply to: Went hypo..on levoxyl..when does it kick in? #1066722Susan,
You are still early in this. Hang in there. Not much will happen in 4 weeks. I did not go hypo till 9 weeks. I went hyper around week number 5..so I was worried about the same thing..not getting enough.
10mci is a good dose. I had an 85% uptake and 15mci. You just need to give it more time. I hated the waiting, too:( Hang in there and keep you labs up every week after week 8:)
in reply to: Went hypo..on levoxyl..when does it kick in? #1066720Susan,
I went from 0.32 TSH to 11.30 in 8days. That is really hyper to really hypo in just 8 days. Now, that is just me. That may not happen to you. It may take more time for you to go hypo. Everyone is different. BUT, again, I would get your labs done every 7 days. It is worth it. What if you went hypo in a couple days…then you will have to wait 4 weeks to start your replacement. Yikes!
You do what you feel you need to do. Everyone is different on this site. I DID NOT want to go a long period of time being hypo. I choose to get my labs done every week. I’m glad I made that personal choice…as I would still be EXTREMELY hypo right now and probably reporting some weigh gain and puffiness.
Ski gave you some really good info. Be as proactive as you can. I went so far to make a chart of my tsh, T3, and T4 numbers over a 2 1/2 year period. This really helped me and I now understand where my levels need to be. AND I will further my knowledge as I find a replacement dose that works good for me. Becasue of my charts, I now know that when my tsh is around 1.0-1.2…I feel good and sleep well. That will give me a good starting base with my replacement
You can’t possibly feel good right now with your tsh in the range it is in….but I would encourage you to REALLY pay attention to how you feel the next 2 weeks. If you start to feel really really good for a couple days….then you may be making a turn toward the hypo road:) I felt SUPER for about 3-4 days….then I went hypo…that fast! Hypo wasn’t as bad as hyper for me…just the low pulse and blood pressure thing freaked me out.
