in reply to: Freshkote eye drops #1072678
I found that ointments based on petroleum jelly worked much better for me, but not the eye drops. I used Lacri-Lube eye ointment. I needed something that would stick to and lubricate my eyes, not run out, and the ointment did just that. I bought it by prescription, but now see that you can buy it online.
in reply to: Surgery in Two Days #1072667That is amazing that now, taking potassium iodide, your palps are gone. It makes me wonder just how much all those little minerals/metals we need and if our problems started because of some deficiency in them. So far, I read that Calcium, Magnesium, Selenium, and Potassium are very good to supplement with if you have Graves. I’d go further and think that all those little things like Boron and Copper and the rest of the element table are either flashed out, or we don’t get enough.
(except for the heavy toxic metals like Mercury that should be flashed out periodically).
It sounds that you did have thyroid levels personally higher for you, for 16 years. Yes, after the surgery try and find the levels of Synthroid that you feel the best at. I also dont’ have my thyroid (RAI) and thankfully I found the right dosage right away, and it served me well for 3 years.
Good luck with your surgery.
in reply to: Graves Disease and Osteoporosis #1072726Cathy – thank you for laying it all out.
Just yesterday, went to a Natural Health Store and was told the same info, that calcium can’t be absorbed well by itself. Got a supplement with 1000 mg Calcium, 1000 IU vitamin D3, and it also contains boron, copper, magnesium, manganese, zinc, vit c, menatetrerone, glucozamine. (As I was explained these little minerals/vitamins help calcium absorption). (Though, this particular supplement you have to take 6 times a day which is going overboard I think, since who’d gonna remember to take it every 2 hours?)
I forgot I came there for a selenium supplement lol because that’s what I’m reading on the Graves boards about. This particular one I bought doesn’t have Selenium in it.
I’m 45 and have no changes in my periods still. I do realize I have to start paying attention to supplements and do weight lifting exersises (which I love by the way as opposite to running).
I had kids just recently, in my 40s, so I guess I was kind of hoping I was still in my peak female performance estrogen-wise but I guess time still goes by.
I’m so glad by the way I found that Health store as I am close to get completely frustrated with traditional doctors. They are too much under pressure from big pharmaceutical companies to sell certain kind of drugs. In two days, both me and my hubby feel much better from some health stuff we got there. It woulf be nice to have this alternative rather than feeling that we are not heard by the Drs.
in reply to: Graves Disease and Osteoporosis #1072723I wonder how the bone loss is relevant to post-RAI people? Is the bone being lost at the same rate as when being hyper?
I think my bones are getting more fragile as I bumped my foot on the pile of wood (need to split wood here for winter LOL) – so I walked around with a foot bruise for about 2 weeks and I think my bones grew together but with an angle. I just personally feel that I would not have this breakage 8 years ago, before Graves.
But then again, maybe it’s the age and getting closer to menopause rather? This disease takes years and while we are waiting for improvements in Graves, the next thing we know it’s 8 or 10 years have passed and we may have naturally become more frail, but expect to feel like "before Graves", which was 8-10 years ago.
in reply to: Need encouragement:( #1072761Gosh that’s so frustrating. I admire you for wanting to get into remission… Though it’s hard with a full time job and probalby commuting, and all other life. Do you have time to get into other aspects of your health, like herbal/ homeopatic/mineral supplements? To reduce your stress? To not eat contaminated food? Because those are parts of the road to the remission. PTU alone I’m afraid won’t cut it if the rest of your life is all the same, stress, eating on the run, no time to smell the roses… (just assuming).
in reply to: Just Curious – Policy on Posting Links #1072841Another strange policy here is replying to an individual poster with "Email me, I’ll send you this wonderful article."
It kind of goes against the copyright anyways? Why leave others readers/Graves sufferers hanging? Why not to post the article or a link to it, here?
in reply to: Just Curious – Policy on Posting Links #1072840I had my link removed (admittedly, it was a link to a particular ophtalmologist office), I was irated and seeked to remove my membership here. Couldn’t find it, and stuck around – mostly because of meeting people, not that I particularly like this policy. The moment I see someone posting link, I copy it as I know it will be removed.
in reply to: Grave’s onset post menopause #1072857There are 3 or so companies that make thyroid supplement, they have different brand names: Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid, Unithroid – they are NOT generic, they are brand names. There is a generic, too : levothyroxine sodium. When you switch between brand names, or switch to generic, a dosage adjustment may be needed. A 100 mcg pill of one company doesn’t equal ot the amount of thyroid hormone in the 100 mcg pill of another company.
Lower energy, feeling getting worse, and falling hair – indicate that something is not right with the amount of your supplement.
in reply to: after RAI, going off meds, healing myself #1072871QueenMe, what dosage of RA iodine did you take?
in reply to: AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!! #1072963hyperm – I also feel very weird reading this experiences since it’s so easy here in Canada. Even if you don’t have a doctor, there are walk-in clinics where nobody will present you with a bill, ever.
There must be some resources for uninsured people, beyond the county office. What do they do with homeless people who have no means to pay for treatment? Any outreach programs, clinics? Sorry Buttamama for lumping you together with the homeless – but if you can access those services, why not??
in reply to: AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!! #1072960USA badly needs universal health care. Those who say otherwise should care for uninsured people.
There is another 22 year old on the other Graves board and she just did RAI – exactly because of her desire to have kids. She got married last September and was all ready to start family but Graves interfered. She’s going to wait for a year before trying.
People do have kids after RAI, as moderators of this board will tell you.
I had Graves for only 3 months before deciding on RAI – exactly because in those three months I envisioned that I would be feeling sick like that (even though my levels were OK with PTU). It’s been 3+ years since RAI, I don’t feel that I have any disease at all. I can eat anything and exersise and pretty much feel like my former self. I had kids just before Graves, so I haven’t been trying, but should I want to, there should be no probs.
in reply to: AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!! #1072954This is so wrong. You already had done tests in the ER recently. She may not be an Endo, but I don’t see why not prescribe min dosage to a person with no insurance.
in reply to: RAI for a 10-year old girl? #1072946bentoboy – hopefully parents with kids or our mods will reply.

in reply to: Weight Loss Success Stories #1073025I’m 10 lbs down since last month, 25 lbs more to go! lol
I ate. It was not just Synthroid’s fault. So I’m 150 lbs now, and I have to watch calories.
