in reply to: Newly Diagnosed GD — Sad and Scared #1065872
I love yoga and just had to drop out of a class because it was too taxing. I would love a list of poses that are good for GD. Also just put my gym membership on hold because I can’t lift weights without wiping myself out for 3 days afterward. I used to be SO physically active. Cannot wait until I can get back to it.
I’m on PTU but my levels aren’t stabilized yet. We’ve increased the dose and am hopeful the levels finally get to where they need to be. It’s SO frustrating gaining weight and not being able to exercise. Counting Weight Watchers points is a great idea. Thank you for that. At the very least I’m going to start writing down everything I eat.
I am so grateful for this community!
in reply to: Newly Diagnosed GD — Sad and Scared #1065867I too am incredibly frustrated with the weight issue. At first I lost it like crazy, even while eating like there was no tomorrow. Then overnight I started gaining. I’ve cut WAY back on what I eat and can’t lose 1 lb, and am still gaining almost to the level I was when this nightmare started.
My question is, besides the loss in muscle mass, what causes the weight gain – especially when my eating is healthy and in line with what it should be, AND I’m still hyper? It makes no sense. My doctor keeps increasing the PTU dose to get me stabilized (again), so so far I can’t exercise, although I’m way stronger than I was before my diagnosis when I was so weak I could barely make it up a stair.
Thanks for any light you can shed on this.
in reply to: Treating the underlying autoimmunity #1065373Here are 2 vitamins that don’t have iodine (there are others, but they are hard to find). The first one is a whole food vitamin (which I take), and the second is a chewable.
in reply to: Treating the underlying autoimmunity #1065367Stress is the thing that I originally believed triggered GD, so what you say makes sense about controlling the reaction to stress as a way to help out the immune system. I’ve put off starting a meditation practice for years now – perhaps it’s time to begin. I’ve read that it does wonders for alleviating the affects of stress on the body.
I am under no illusion that ANY supplement will cure me – they are only to help me feel better and keep the rest of the body as healthy as possible. Fortunately, my doctor is the one who recommended them and knows how they all work together. I too am hoping for remission, but my thyroid levels have been going in the opposite direction lately, so the search for treatment and symptom control options continues. Sure hope I feel better when the higher dose of PTU kicks in. I am SO very tired of getting better, then worse, then better, then worse – and not being able to live a full life. And on top of all that – I think TED is starting up and I keep gaining weight. So much for vanity! lol
Congratulations on making your decision. I’ve found decision-making based on sound reasoning to be challenging with GD! I’m very interested in how your surgery goes because I am considering it for myself. I got GD in 2007 (if not earlier), but was not diagnosed until the middle of 2008. I found a holisitc MD who put me on PTU as well as several supplements to support the organ systems that get so stressed from the overproduction of thyroid hormone. The one that helped the most with my depression was support for the adrenals. I have much more energy now (although nothing like what I had pre-GD) and no depression.
Best of luck next week. It takes alot of courage to have surgery. Let us hear from you.
