in reply to: Insomia relief? #1061204
Hey folks, I’ve been following Mike’s post with interest since I suffer similar symptoms, albeit a bit less severe from the sounds of it.
I recently started acupuncture treatments for some of the symptoms, anxiety, sleep disturbances, weight gain, hot flashes, and cold hands. My acupuncturist was clear that treatment cannot ‘cure’ GD, but may help with the symptoms. After the first treatment, I noticed I slept through the night for the first time in months and had no trouble going to sleep.
I’m now three treatments in and have no more anxiety, have lost weight, my hot flashes are now just warm moments (no more profuse sweating!) and my hands don’t feel icy any more.
I committed to a series of 6 treatments, once a week and then will move to one a month treatments. They take about an hour to an hour and a half each time and although I was nervous at first (you know, that weird feeling you get when you do something completely outside your normal comfort zone!) I now look forward to it.
My health insurance covers most of the cost and my Endo said "can’t hurt to try" so, I went for it.
I am SO glad I tried it! ” title=”Very Happy” />
in reply to: Insomia relief? #1061192Hey Mike, I suffer off and on with the insomnia…have for a while. What helps me is to make sure I don’t stimulate my brain before bed, no TV or reading, for at least half an hour. If you can manage to do some meditation (no, it doesn’t have to be the ‘woo-woo’ stuff) just find a quiet place, breath in and out counting the first in/out breath as a pair (one) and repeat to ten. You may find that after about 15 minutes you are very relaxed and it makes it easier to get to sleep. That helps me at least. I occasionally have trouble with waking up in the night but lay there and do the breathing again and it seems to work. Also, when you have the feeling of fullness in your chest, I’ve found rolling to my right side helps — no pressure on my heart. I think we all try what works and sometimes we try several at a time. Hope you can figure out your combination!
And yes! in answer to your last question
in reply to: Levothyroxine hair loss question #1061279I have experienced the hair loss with levothyroxine, it was alarming at first…more hair than usual on the hairbrush, strands coming out easily if I ran my hands through my hair. I went to my hair dresser and she got me a great shampoo and conditioner that was designed to help hair loss in women, worked pretty good..still some hair loss but it seemed to minimize it. A couple of weeks later, I stopped the levothyroxine (I had RAI) and my hair loss stopped. It never got to the point that I had bald spots or visible loss but, sure felt that way. Use the expertise of your doctors and professional hair dresser to help you!
