in reply to: how quickly can Tapazole make you hypo? #1070163
Hi Elise,
I’m happy to hear you are feeling better. Like everything else – they symptoms may be different for everyone but when I went to hypo I gained weight and I am usually tired, where I could sleep all day if my 2 little ones would let me. I also become very fatigued if I do to much in one day I’m wiped out the next day.
I think usually weight gain is the biggest complaint when you are hypo; just check with your doctor to make sure you can continue with workouts.
You will need blood work thought to actually find out if you went to hypo but your dr. should do those pretty regularly if you are just starting out with Tapazole, maybe every 6 weeks at least.

in reply to: Help me sleep PLEASE!! #1070664Hi Michelle,
I agree with what Ski suggested, she is very wise. Like everyone else has said and experienced, as time goes on and your body becomes use to the ATD your symptoms will become less and under control and you will be OK.
After reading through this tread I know think my GD started just after my daughter was born just over 3 yrs ago, I was diagnosed apprx 6 months after she was born. I now remember having trouble sleeping but I thought it was because she was just a newborn and was up a few times during the night and also having to keep up with my 20 month old Son. But now I truly believe it was GD and what scared me the most after she was born was that I tried Tylenol PM, suggested by a friend to only take 1 pill instead of 2, I only used it 2 times and both times something happened during the night that I can not recall at all doing. One was one night we had our daughter in her crib when we went to bed and when we woke up she was in her cradle in our room and my husband swears he did not move her. So I must have gotten up to feed her and then put her in our room but I have no memory of that and it scared the heck out of me. So I threw that bottle of Tylenol PM out.
I have been off of Tapazole for about 6 weeks hoping to be in remission; I have recently started to have problems sleeping again, muscle weakness, out of breath walking up step, and just plain fatigued. I’m guessing I’m not in remission and will have to discuss other options with my Dr. on 7/7 when I go back to see him.
Michelle – I know you’ve heard this before but hang in there it does get better.

in reply to: Leg Cramps? #1070676Mickey65
I am so sorry you are experiencing leg cramps, I had them also before I was diagnosed with GD and shortly after. They seemed to stop after I was on Tapazole for a while.
Not sure if this will help but I was always told to eat bananas while I was pregnant because I had leg cramps then too. The bananas seemed to help and of course they are loaded with potassium.
Good Luck and I hope they subside soon.

in reply to: Weight gain during Graves disease #1070993Kimberly – I was not very thrilled with the leader of this meeting location but I liked the other people working there and the people at the meeting, plus it was close to home. I am thinking about going back, if nothing else getting my books out and trying to start on my own. I have to start something because I know some of my issues are because of my weight.
About a month ago I started to see an Endo (05/06) because only my family doctor was treating me for Graves up to that point and I just got sick & tired of being just that, sick & tired. Once I went to the Edno they had my lab work from the previous week (4/29) and all the paperwork in regards to medical history and family history. I saw the nurse practioner, who I just loved, we went over everything and I answered some questions for her. She had me stop my Tapazole completely that day because my TSH was at 8, I had been taking 10mg, 5mg, 10mg up to that point.
I had to have a complete CBC & thyroid blood work, a bone density & an ultrasound of my thyroid done before going back to the doctor. Since that day I’ve been back to see the Edno Dr. and all of my thryroid levels were within the normal ranges, he is hoping I am in remission and all will be fine. No news yet on my bone density and my ulstrasound showed I have a 6 mm mass on my thyroid but the doctor wasn’t too concerned about that yet, only if it gets larger.
I have had more energy on some days since stopping the Tapazole and I feel OK but I still have my days were I swear if I could I would sleep all day but I can’t because of my children and work. Somedays I over exert myself and them pay for it the next day, where I can’t do much at all.
I’m hoping something gives somewhere sometime soon.
in reply to: Weight gain during Graves disease #1070989Oh my – this, for me is one of the worst struggles I have – the weight gain! In the 2 1/2 yrs since being diagnosed with Graves and taking tapazole, I have gained 45 lbs. Along with the weight gain I have been extremely tired for the last 4-5 months but I have 2 youngs children – they are my main concern – so I put off going to the gym so I can get enough sleep and then spend time with my children before having to go to work.
It just seems like a evil cycle sometimes, when I do feel good I don’t have the time to get to the gym and then when I do have time I’m completely exhausted. Of course maybe like some of the other people on this board, when I do feel good I seem to over do it and then pay for it the next couple of days because I’m so exhausted or sore. I even tried Weight Watchers a few years ago and was doing really well, this was at the beginning of me being diagnosed with Graves and when I didn’t loose weight for a couple of weeks – the leader of this particular group said I was at a platue – so this was discouraging to me and quit a few weeks later. I really have to find a way to get to the gym but also a more healthy diet.
Good luck with everything and it is nice to know that we aren’t alone.
in reply to: New to this website #1071156Hello to all & thank you for all of the encouraging words.
I first have to say this – My hubby has been really great, he has helped out around the house and with the kids and I know he is trying to understand what I’m experiencing but unless you are going through this, like any other illness, it’s difficult to put themselves in our shoes. I do try to show him my appreciation as much as I can; I know that is important so he knows how much he means to me and our family.
Nancy has a great idea & I’m going to do just that, I’m taking my husband to my next appt. so he can hear what the doctor has to say and ask any questions that he has. This will benefit me too because I tend to get things mixed up or forget certain things the doctor has said.
Since I was diagnosed with GD almost 3 yrs ago I have gained 45 lbs and that is most depressing for me. Like most with GD and not knowing it, I lost weight but I don’t know how much was from the disease. Before the actually diagnosis I had just finish nursing my daughter who was about 4-5 months old, so I thought the weight loss was from having the baby & then nursing. It was all of the other symptoms that sent me to the doctor. Before I got pregnant with my first child 6 yrs ago I was a gym rat and worked hard to loose a lot of weight and become pretty fit. Now I feel just horrible and that is one of the reasons I wanted to be referred to an Endo specialist, I just want to get back to as normal as I can and not be so tired and run down. I have joined a new gym near our house and at first I was doing really well but then I re-injured my lower back in the beginning of March and after that I started to get really tired every day.
I’ve noticed recently that my bones are just achy, they just start hurting from deep in the bone. I’m wondering if this is because I’m off all the tapazole & because my body is going back to hyper. Has anyone else experience this kind of pain?
Good healthy to all.
