in reply to: Change in taste? #1180616

Thank you Sue, Krayon & Kimberly for your input. It may well be the meds since I am still on Methimazole, Propranolol and Nortriptyline at least until I get labs done next Monday. I didn’t notice the change in taste, though, until after the RAI. It’s not really metallic as much as somewhat bland. My husband complained of metallic taste when he was on some meds and his doctor said that’s what quite a few medications cause. I guess I’ll see if it’s my imagination when I go on Synthroid.

And, Sue, please send me your taste buds and I’ll happily send you mine.

Hey, Boomer, you’re a week ahead of me. How are you doing? Have you done your labs? Your my compass and you disappeared. Hope you’re doing fine.

    Hugs to all.

It seems that in my case the problem didn’t start until the stress in my life stopped. I took care of my husband, who was fighting cancer for 7 1/2 years, with no health worries of my own. 4 months after he passed away I noticed a small goiter, then weight loss and so on.
Incidentally, my youngest son was diagnosed with Hashimoto a month before my Graves.
So, did the stress keep the Graves away?

    @ Sue,

I am so happy that your ordeal at the hospital is over and you’re home getting better every day. I wish you the very best, coming to you from the hotter than blazes East Coast.

I am OK again, the stye on my eye is down to just a pink spot, no headache and my arm isn’t too bad either. So, no whining or complaining today.
I really appreciate all the support even for my little stuff.

    @ Deb,

My husband and I talked about a trip Down Under but we never got around to it. Too bad. It would have been fantastic, no doubt.

    Hugs.

    Hi Shirley,

I appreciate you listening to me prattle on about little aches and pains when you’re dealing with the real stuff. I am so sorry, Honey, and I wish there was something I could do. To tell you the honest truth, I hope I’ll never be in your shoes, you’re a much stronger person than I am. Compared to the issues you’re dealing with I should be dancing a jig. And you are very kind in not pointing it out.
Why are some doctors such insensitive jerks? I agree with Boomer. Just reading about your doctor’s attitude makes me angry.
I’ll be happy to be your sister, although the “much younger” part would be a lie since I have 3 sons in their middle 40s.
The getting together thing would be great and I would surely risk the wine if you all would risk the consequences. Oh, to be young and stupid again!

And, Boomer, if you bring the Vodka please don’t forget the Orange juice because, unless we’re drinking it out of a paper bag, we’ll need juice.
Love the airport story! And since I’m grandma I’ll make sure I get out of the car.

    Hugs.

Ah, Boomer, you are a read for sore eyes.
Thanks for your kind words. I am hoping that it will get better and I’ll take your word for it. I know it’s too early for a change towards hypo and I think my eye is also a left-over from that cold. As for the headaches – I’ve been getting a few lately.
Since you are a week ahead of me it’ll be interesting to see how long it’ll take to kill that bothersome thyroid.
You know after the RAI I really wanted to go to the airport and stir up some excitement, but nowadays we’re talking bail and stuff, since they have no sense of humor. In my much younger days it would have been fun.

Hi Karen, thank you as well for taking time out for me. You’re a gem. Wine would be great, but I haven’t had any in 7 years, due to my husband’s cancer he was not allowed to drink, which means one glass would put me right over the edge.

    You made me feel better.
    Thanks for always being there.

OK, the RAI is all done and I am back home, sequestered for the next 5 days.
Had to take 24.2 Millicuries of I 131, in the form of 2 Sodium Iodide capsules.
The eno at the hospital said to stay on the diet for the rest of today, so I’m going to pig out tomorrow.
I will see my endo in 3 months and have a blood test in 6 weeks. Until then I’ll just wait and see how it goes.

I’m going to quit writing now because for some reason I had to write this twice, it kept disappearing.

    Hugs.

My symptoms, initially, were a galloping heartbeat, weight loss and a small goiter, just big enough for me to notice. After I started the meds I felt fine, a bit fatigued and short tempered, but fairly normal.
I will be 70 years old at the end of August so I was not opposed to some resolution. The Endo and I discussed surgery as well and he said that the success does depend largely on the skill of the surgeon. Due to my age we agreed that fiddling with the dosage of the meds would be easier after the RAI since the Graves was discovered very early.
I agree. I believe in getting things done and over with and I am not going to obsess over tests, hormone levels, and the like, because I am not giving in to the stress. I went through all that with my husband, who fought stomach cancer for 7 1/2 years, and that was worse than anything I’m expecting.
I am aware that there will be miserable days and better days but I will not let this get me down.
I read all the posts with great interest, thanks for that, guys and gals, and I know some of the things to expect, although each of us is a little different and I am hoping for the very best.
This is the first day of the “special diet”, which only means that everything I like to eat is forbidden. Darn it, if it doesn’t have bacon written on it it’s just not edible!

    Hugs to all of you.

    Hi Ann,

I’m taking the same meds as you.
I had been taking Ibuprofen for muscle pain, and sometimes migraine medicine, but when I mentioned it to my doctor he got upset, told me not to do that and prescribed something different for my headaches.
He said that the Ibuprofen, Tylenol, Aleve and such were bad for my heart rate.

    Best of luck.

I understand, Karen, it sounds a bit simplistic, but if it works I’d rather get it done. I figure it’s worth a shot, depending on what the Endo has to say.
The doctor upped my Propranolol from 60mg once a day to 40mg twice a day. I’m also still taking Methimazole 10mg twice a day, and he gave me Nortriptyline HCL 10mg to help with the headaches and sleep problems.
In his office my blood pressure was sky high, which I find strange, but he checked it twice.
Next blood work in two weeks, next appointment with him in a month.
    So, we’ll see.

It’s always possible to have a virus, although today I seem to be much better. I finally got warm enough to even please me.
    It comes and goes.
Thanks for all the good advice and thoughts.

Blood work was done a week ago and I haven’t heard anything from my doctor. My appointment is on Friday and unless he comes up with some really good answers I’ll be looking for an Endocrinologist.
I’m beginning to think that my doctor does not know what to do and, what’s worse, does not have the guts to say so.

My blood pressure has been normal or below all my life, breathing rather shallow.

2 weeks ago BP was 117/52, pulse 51
1 week ago BP was 107/56, pulse 50
yesterday BP was 103/48, pulse 52
today BP was 113/53, pulse 53

The reason I know these readings is my neighbor, a nurse, who likes to keep track of me. Since I am, you know, older than dirt and living alone.
