There are so many variables to answering this question that really, the only one qualified to answer is your doctor, sorry.

Hi folks – I’ve been on Tapazole since November for my second round of Graves. The dosage was increased in December because my numbers had continued to rise. I was just tested again – Free T4 is in normal range (1.46), but T3 is still elevated – it’s 235, normal range is 72-170 according to my lab.

Is it normal for one to come into normal range but not the other? The T3 has come down – it had been at 283 in December. Does it just need more time?

    Thanks in advance.

I agree with Ski. The range is a range for a reason; you need to talk to your doctor and try to get your bloods drawn on days you feel excellent health wise. Once you have a pattern of feel good day levels you can better assess your manage where you want to be.

Your doctor will definitely have to answer whether you will need a dosage increase or whether it will take more time, but I can tell you that I’ve heard many people say that their T3 levels were more stubborn to lower on ATDs than the T4 levels. Do have this discussion with your doctor about the reasons for this in your case (which could be different than for someone else), and let us know what he recommends!

Thanks for your comments. I emailed my doc this morning – he said that while my numbers are still on the high side, they are stable enough for surgery, which is what I’m planning to do. So – no change in Rx at this time.

Just as an aside – this is my second round of Graves, and it’s definitely "stronger," or more aggressive, this time. I’m taking at least twice the amount of tapazole I took the first time, and the first time my numbers were within normal range within a month.

That’s really interesting. Thanks for sharing that!
