    Hello everyone,

I am having trouble finding a prescription of “Strong Iodine, 5%” and the walgreens that I go to does not have it.

Where were you able to find yours?

Does the amazon link product work?

    (link removed)

In the second link, it says “Caution: DO NOT use Lugol`s Iodine solution if you have an overactive thyroid or hyperthyroidism,” but I thought this lowers the vascularity of the thyroid and is to prepare for the procedure?

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Thank you!

You are correct, it does reduce the vascularity before a thyroidectomy. But is nothing you should self prescribe, and I hope it is not readily available on the internet. The ramifications are big. If you have a thyroidectomy scheduled now, and the surgeon has not prescribed it, call and ask him/her why and what thinking is. Generally, it is prescribed very close to the days before the surgery date.

Hello – Agree with Shirley that there is a significant risk in purchasing this over the Internet! (I’ve removed the original links above in accordance with the forum’s policy on links).

Please call the surgeon’s office regarding if/when you should start taking this and to ask for suggestions as to where you can purchase this product. If the surgeon definitely has instructed you to use this and your local Walgreen’s is out, see if they can order it from another store.

Some surgeons will recommend Lugol’s, others will not. You want to make sure that you are prepping for the procedure in accordance with your own surgeon’s recommendations!

If your surgeon prescribed this (and that’s the only reason you should be taking it), then their office should be able to help you find a pharmacy that carries it. Before my thyroidectomy, my surgeon prescribed “Lugol’s or SSKI.” She told me that she only prescribes this for her patients with Graves’. The first pharmacy they referred me to had stopped carrying it, but my surgeon’s assistant was able to find SSKI for me at the pharmacy of a different hospital. I live in a large metropolitan area, so I was surprised at how difficult it was to find. Because of the delay in getting my prescription filled, I was not able to take it for the full 10 days and I was frantic, thinking that my surgery might have to be postponed. I was able to get it 8 days before my surgery, though, and my surgeon said that was enough time. My surgery went well with no complications.

My insurance didn’t cover my prescription, but fortunately, it wasn’t terribly expensive – around $27. My SSKI was manufactured by Upsher-Smith Laboratories. If your surgeon’s office can’t help you find it, maybe you can contact Upsher-Smith on their website and ask if there are any pharmacies in your area that carry it.

Good luck with your surgery. :)
