My endo didn’t suggest any changes in diet when I asked, not even coffee. I find conflicting info online. What have you cut out or added after being diagnosed with hyperthyroid/graves? I’m also interested in those who have achieved remission and wonder if it plays a part.
Hello – For the most part, Graves’ is not a condition that can be impacted by diet, although patients who are hypERthyroid are generally advised to avoid foods/supplements that have lots of iodine, like the seaweed wrap that comes with sushi. Many patients also choose to minimize processed foods with unpronounceable ingredients and instead focus on eating whole, unprocessed foods.
I’ve heard of patients trying other dietary approaches (vegan, gluten-free, low iodine, eliminating food sensitivities), but there really isn’t any good research to determine whether these approaches are helpful. And definitely consult with your doctor before cutting any major nutrients out of your diet.
As for the coffee, I personally switched to decaf after I was diagnosed. The problem for me when I was hypER was that caffeine made my hand tremors worse – to the point where it was obvious to anyone around me!
Hi, I saw no need to make changes, and I did not make any changes at all.
I’m sure you will get some varied thoughts. I have coffee every morning, but it has never bothered me.. Kimberly’s comments are relevant regarding seaweed.
And, yes, you will find everything imaginable on the net.
ShirleyI was Vegan 12 years before diagnosis and have been 80% Raw and 100% organic since the RAI last fall. Soon I will cross 20 years as a Vegan, more than half my life.
I eat a lot of foods that are said to be anti-inflammatory. Kale every day, fresh fruits and whatever vegetables are in season. The only high-heat treated foods I eat are pressure cooked dry beans and the rice/pea component of my hemp/chia/rice/pea protein shakes.
There are no gluten containing foods in my house, nor canned foods, soy foods, or highly processed foods. Occasionally I will fire up the dehydrator to 105 degrees for some cashew “cheese” kale chips, but that is about as hot as my veggies get.
I drink 3 cups of green tea every day. The caffeine in the tea does not seem to effect me, but last week I drank half a Diet Coke while at lunch with a friend and it messed me up for a few hours.
As far as benefits? Dr. Barnard, Dr. Weil, and the dietician I saw all say I am doing it right, but I still got Graves’ and still have Graves’.
This lifestyle is not for everyone, but I enjoy crunchy foods and meeting crunchy people at the farmer’s market. Always entertaining.
You haven’t lived until you have eaten raw turmeric root. 😮
@AzGravesGuy – Thanks for the update on the raw vegan plan. I’ve been curious about this lifestyle since tennis player Venus Williams went raw vegan after her diagnosis with Sjogren’s Syndrome (another autoimmune condition that affects the moisture-producing glands).
Love the comment about meeting “crunchy” people. My favorite local farmer’s market has gone downhill…I need to try and find another one!
Our approach was to look in providing the most nutritious diet we could and eliminating as many allergenic/inflamatory dietary constituents.
This resulted in basically a Paleo style diet comprised of whole fruit, Veg, some nuts and variety of meats, we eliminated grains, soy, and limited legumes.
Reduced consumption of Omega 6 vegetable oils and increased intake of Omega 3 EPA & DHA.
We consume very little processed or packaged foods as there are too many additives and we use very little processed sugar, we prefer to have all our macro and micro nutrients in the form of whole food.In addition we also did a bit of rationalisation of excessive household cleaners and personal care products as many of these contain powerful chemicals, even the so called “natural” ones.
We also took active measures in lifestyle behaviours and stress reduction, this is an understated area in regards to overall health.
Basically tried as much as possible to reduce negative impacts and increase positive impacts.
Did it help get us to this point?, we believe it did.
