Hi all, I’ve had a bit of a chronic cough lately due to sinus problems and I hope what I’m about to describe is due to that. But I’ve never felt anything like it before. I feel this weird feeling of pressure in my lower throat that comes and goes. It’s not painful but it is uncomfortable and where it shouldn’t be. I can still breathe and swallow normally, but the pressure does feel under the adam’s apple and inward a little bit. Anybody else experience this? I’m getting an ultrasound in a couple of days hoping it can set my mind at ease.

edited to add: I think I’m a little on the hypothyroid side right now

Hello – If the thyroid is enlarged, that can certainly create a feeling of pressure. Hopefully, the ultrasound will give you some additional direction. In the meantime, if anything changes in the next couple of days and you do start experiencing difficulty breathing/swallowing, definitely get in to see a doctor ASAP.

    Take care!

Thanks Kimberly! When I had my first ultrasound they said my thyroid wasn’t enlarged so I hope it’s not up to anything since then.

Guys I am freaking out….I keep feeling like my throat is being pressed in. Feels like a finger is poking me in the lower throat toward my windpipe. I keep checking though and I can breathe and swallow okay so I guess it’s not a crisis. If anyone here has experienced anything like this please let me know. I guess I should be encouraged (?) that no one here has experienced anything similar. I checked on another board with mostly hypothyroid people and this symptom was mentioned so maybe I’m hypo now? I just want to be WELL, will I ever be friggin WELL??????

    Sorry for the rant.

    Hi there,

Sounds like a goiter. TPO antibodies are indicators of thyroid inflammation.

When I was dx in May I had no swelling at all. Then in June I had an uptake and a week later I had a goiter. I was like you and noticed a huge difference with speech, swallowing and pressure when I first noticed any swelling. Then I went for an ultrasound in Sept. and it was 7+cm right side and 9+cm left. Typical thyroid is around 4cm each side. So yes I did notice quite a difference in a short time, but once I my levels started to change most of that feeling went away. Now, I can tell if my levels are going too far out just by pressure on my neck.

    Hope that helped.

Thanks Naisly! When I feel my neck or look in the mirror I don’t see a difference but then I am a little, ahem, plump and that might mask things. Could you feel the goiter with your fingers or see it or was it just a sensation of internal pressure? It’s good to know it should get better once thyroid levels are in the right place. Oh and speech, yes, I am very hoarse and feel like I have to force my voice out – thought it was cause I had been coughing but it is odd.

ETA: so was it your thyroid levels being too high or too low that causes the pressure for you?

At first my voice changed – Hoarse or I had to cough sort or sound.

Then pressure – Almost as if (hard to explain) I had a tight collar on. And a slight pressure when I swallowed, as if I might choke on my food, I never did of course, but it only felt like that.

Then I felt a lump, but when I asked people around me they said they didn’t see anything.

Then my levels went wacky (hyper) and the above seemed worse, Thats when the lump was more noticable.

Now, even when my levels went way down (hypo) I felt the same as above.

I also notice a slight lump that I’m sure only I or my Dr would see. I occasionally feel it inside when I swallow and can’t stand to wear a turtleneck. Mine seems to go up and down but subtly. It’s more noticiable for whatever reason when I’m also congested.

Be very, very gentle when feeling your thyroid. Too much poking and prodding can rev it up. My Dr. always uses a feather light touch when physically examining mine.

    Best wishes,
    Laurel

Naisly, yep that sounds very similar to what I am feeling thanks for sharing details.

Laurel, my docs mostly say my nodules are on the inside wall of my thyroid very hard for them to palpate but last ultrasound showed many small nodules. No worries though I won’t poke at them!

Thanks to both of you…feeling a little calmer about it today.
