Hi All–
It’s been a while since I’ve posted– but I need some advice desperately. I am a year and a half post-TT. Before surgery I gained (I’m one of those lucky GD patients who gained… ugh..) almost 60lbs. December 7th (2013), was the first time in almost 5 years (pre and post TT) that I had levels within the normal range (it was very exciting, my Endo wrote an “A+” on my lab results!).
In February I joined Weight Watchers, and between Feb and mid march I lost 16lbs. I felt great up until the last week or so of March when suddenly I felt very “Gravesy”. (Hot and Cold, Insomnia, Heart Palp, anxiety, lethargic, brain fog, etc…). I was absolutely miserable (as you all understand I’m sure!). I haven’t felt so bad since before surgery. I made an appointment with my endo and explained the situation and that I thought maybe I needed a med adjustment (Currently on Levothyroxine 150). At the appointment, the doctor said that while my levels have changed a bit, it wasn’t enough to adjust my thyroid meds yet, put me on Metformin ER (apparently it has weight loss properties?), a beta blocker for the heart palps and told me to come back in a few weeks when I’d lost a bit more.
Since my appointment, I have stopped losing weight and actually started gaining despite following the diet religiously. (back up 7 lbs in 2 1/2 weeks). I am so discouraged and frustrated, I don’t even know what to do. Here are my labs:December 2013:
TSH 0.83
T4 9.9
T3 total 102March 2014
TSH 0.66
T4 11.8
T3 total 113Any guidance, help or advice would be so greatly appreciated….

Wow. I am so sorry!!
I am very concerned and puzzled why your doc prescribed Metformin. Please ask the reason. Or get another opinion. This is a very significant drug, should not be used for some side effect (which happens to be weight gain, I think) It is for diabetes. Beta blocker makes sense.
WW sounds wonderful.
Your labs would mean more if you had the ranges along the results.
I have another concern that your endo should be looking at the trend in your labs, AND your symptoms, which are definitely Graves’y.
Any chance you can ask a lot more questions about this? Coming back when you lose more weight is not treating Graves’, in my opinion.
some metformin info:http://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/metformin-oral-route/side-effects/drg-20067074
Of COURSE, you know we are fellow patients. But if I were you, I would have the above questions and concerns, it seems kinda wrong to me.
