    Hi meme,

Well, it appears you are doing everything right ~ now your body just needs to get “normal,” and you will see some improvement. I have a friend who gained while hyper, and went undiagnosed for something like three years because the doctors simply wouldn’t test her for hyperthyroidism when she was gaining weight (how ridiculous!). Once her levels returned to normal, her weight issues improved. I think one of the most important factors is the muscle-wasting that hyperthyroidism causes ~ the muscles waste away, and since they are another element of our metabolism, things just go crazy. Remember, after your levels return to normal, go EASY on that new, soft muscle tissue you’ll be getting. Once that is strengthened, things ought to get better for you.

In the meantime, continue that healthy eating, you good girl you!

Ok, now we know you CAN gain weight with Graves, like bobbi said sometimes life isnt fair. So what do you do about it? Ive tried cutting down on eating but with Graves Im hungrey about 3-4 hours after I eat, and for some reason at night I get really hungery, i have been known to wake up at 3 in the morning and be so hungry i have to eat! not good for the old hips and thighs. Im 35 and i always here people saying how good they looked in thier 30’s! hello! not here! I do eat veggies and follow a low carb diet. If I continue eating right and I go on thyroid hormones when i go hypo and get stabilized, can I hope I will return to a normal weight?
Before I was diagnosed with Graves I went to a personal trainer and a dietitian who were baffled why I didnt lose weight when i eat healthy. Ive have felt really bad in the past and couldnt go to the gym but now after the RAI treatment and the beta blockers I am able to walk on the tread mill and lift some weights. Life isnt fair but I hope once Im stable I can lose some of this weight! What the kicker is I eat healthy, maybe i should just pig out!! No, because I cant imagine what i would look like if I did.
    Anyone else have weight gain?

    Hello Everyone,

I just found this board tonight and thought it was very interesting. I was diagnosed with Graves 4 years ago (I am 34 years old). What a rollercoaster. I am having a problem with the weight. I have always had a higher metabolism then the average person. The doctors say my TSH levels are within the normal range. I cannot lose the 17 pounds I have gained. I have tried dieting for 6 months with exercises that included aerobics and went to Curves. Anyone have any ideas as to what I can try? I also cannot lose the new flab on my tummy (I am so thrilled about that)Other than a tummy tuck does anyone have suggestions on that? I would really appreciate any input!!

    Thanks!

I too have experienced weight gain. I have actually tracked myself for a few weeks at 1300 calories a day and lost 1 pound! But gained that back as soon as I quit restricting myself to that. I have to be very careful at what I eat because i gain so easily. I also have a bloated feeling and know that I carry extra water weight. Been wondering if that is common? It’s good to hear that others are experiencing this. So what do we do and once we have the RAI or suregery can we lose these extra pounds like normal thyroid people?

    Hi Alexia,
I really believe that although your levels are normal according the doctor’s chart they may not be normal for you. Perhaps you are meant to be on the higher or lower side of normal. From reading other people’s experiences I really don’t think there is a ‘normal’ which suits everybody. If I feel sluggish and weight is creeping up without help I go to my doctor and we discuss it and he adjusts my meds based on my feelings which I chart with every blood test, this way I can perhaps find my ‘normal’. Between you and your doctor I’m sure you can find the right balance.
    Take care.

Anyway, in the last 2 weeks I have gained 10 pounds!! I am so frustrated I just want to cry. My energy levels are the same. I exercise like crazy and always have.. i am following weight watchers to try to keep the weight off.. but nothing is working..

I have gained 35-40 pounds in the last year since being diagnosed hyper (I havenb’t undergone any treatment yet) and I am still gaining weight. It doesn’t matter what I do, how much I do or don’t exercise, what I eat or don’t eat. It just keeps going up. Which is REALLY annoying!!!

I am hoping that treatment will make me lose weight. (hey- a girl can hope right? ;)

It appears graves is quite looney when it comes to weight. i lost 35 lbs before being diagnosed, went from 102 to 70 over last summer. Now i’m p to 107 with no clothes that fit. I am assured by the docs, the prednisone takes time to clear out, and that the thyroid medicine also does funny things. At least I have my sight, and my therapist and his pills keep me in a positive mood. Now I have an excuse to buy new clothes! See find the lemon in the lemonade. You will get through this, that’s pretty much a given. I’m using tomorrow to thank God for giving me Graves instead of the horrible cancers I lost three friends and a brother two in the past 3 months. Cheers! It never hurt to be optimistic!
