Woo-Hoo, Madame X! Don’t you just love that energy??? I found it, too. Except now I think I’m heading hyper again.

Kimberly- Good luck with the WW’s. Did you have fun in Charlotte???

Well, I lost a few pounds really fast and thought it was GOOD, down around 138- but now I’m sorry to say that the evil hyper beast may be roaring her head. I had a bad couple runs heart rate wise, and the weight loss, and noticing periods of fast HR, I’m talking too fast and not sleeping too well. Since there’s no way to reach my doctor Friday through Monday, I stopped taking the Levo on Friday. I figured I’d just "forget" Friday and see what happened. Then I still felt hyper Saturday, so I forgot again. Guess what? I still feel hyper. I suppose I will have to place the doc call on Monday and let her know what’s up. I’m sure I’ll be chastised for "forgetting" to take my medicine. I’m disgusted. It better not be coming back 3 months post RAI.

HI all,

How is everyone? Lacie sorry to hear you aren’t great! Can you go hyper so quickly after RAI – my knowledge is very limited. Gosh that would be awful if you had the treatment but there is a possibility of going hyper the same way again.

I am not weighing myself this week as its too depressing and also the time of the month coming up so not even going there!

My hair has started falling out again! Anyone know if that is also a sign of hypo? That had all settled down after the TS and I noticed it was coming in thicker now the sink is full as I wash and the brush too (just gently brushing).

hyperm- maybe the hair falling out thing is from the quickly changing from hyper to normal to hypo? That’s when I noticed mine was the worst, when the levels were swinging from one extreme to the other. How are you feeling otherwise these days?

Well, I did skip my dose for 3 days. Bad, bad, bad me. And now I’m back to taking half of it and feeling pretty good. I don’t know what to do- I go to the doctor next week and she’ll probably yell at me. I did get the OK to do my labs this week so that she has them by my appt. But all she’s taking is the TSH and if I went from hypo to normal and then pushing hyper these past few days- the TSH which lags behind- isn’t going to show it. But the good news is I’m down to 139- yay, back under 140 and "only" 5 pounds up from my pre-Graves’ weight. I haven’t felt as hungry and have been running and working a lot. I do have just about the "right" amount of energy- and my HR has seemed pretty close to where it was before all of this began. Maybe this is normal? for now anyways .

Yay…congrats on the weight loss! That’s great that your hunger and energy levels seem to be getting back to normal.

The conference in Charlotte was excellent! All the presenters were great, and it’s always nice to get a chance to connect with folks who "get" what we are going through. I would definitely encourage everyone to try and make it next year!

Go lacie! Well done you!

ach I am just getting fat! But my levels are way up there 32 TSH reading so I knew that I was not in control of the weight gain the last few weeks. I am not weighing myself at the moment as I will just start to panic   . I am going on – well the jeans still fit so that is a good sign . They have increased my thyroxine to 150mcg so here is hoping it will make a difference.

Healthy eating all the way – have been making my meals in the slow cooker the days I am working so that the dinner is ready when I come home hence no snacking before hand!

Indeed — and making one main meal for the entire week helps, too: Stew, meatballs, chili, stuffed cabbage, stuffed peppers, chicken meal, turkey breast, etc.

When you come home from work, you plumb don’t feel like preparing a whole meal.

FINALLY lost a pound this week after three straight weeks of gains – 142.8. But as hard as I worked all week, I felt like I *deserved* about a 10 pound loss!

My deal with myself this week is that if I manage to stay on track all week, I’m going to buy myself the DVD of “My Life In Ruins.” (VERY funny movie – it stars the lady who was in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”). That will hopefully give me something else to look forward to at the end of this week besides the number on the scale. <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />

Have had the flu, not felt good for a while and then changed my dose of levoxyl again this week…… Up and down but I have finally kind of maintained my weight for a few weeks. I am at 164.2 down from 170. Want to lose more but I think I’m doing well since I haven’t started to exercise yet and I’ve had to go off caffeine. I have become very sensitive to it, even in chocolate At least I’m not gaining any more. I will keep myself to one little snack size bag of chocolate when I really want some. Hope that will go away as I get to normal levels.

ewmb – What impact do you think the caffeine has…does it speed up your metabolism or give you more energy to exercise?

Just curious, as I was reading an old issue of SELF magazine where they had a picture of a couple of different kinds of coffee, and the caption said something like, "boost your metabolism with these…"

I actually gave up my morining coffee about the time I was diagnosed, because it really aggravated my hand tremors. I wonder if that might have been a contributor to my weight issues.

Kimberly,
I don’t know that it had anything to do with my personal weight loss. I now that caffeine is a stimulant and does the same thing to you as other stimulants can like raise your BP. I was never a coffee drinker. I got hooked on Dr. Pepper after the birth of my second child, a long time ago, and then went off it and had gone off it during Graves bad times. I had recently tried to drink some again and it seems to make me jittery if I overdo it. I am more bummed about the chocolate. It may just be my imagination on that one. I think you have to eat a lot more chocolate than soda to get the same amount of caffeine.

You can google side effects of caffeine on the internet I’m sure.

Way to go ewmb and Kimberly on the weight losses! Wow, I can’t even fathom giving up caffeine. I’m seriously addicted. I was even drinking Red Bull when I was in extreme hypo-land just so I could continue functioning!

I guess I’m still in extreme hypo-land since I went to the doc and got my labs back today and my TSH is 46. something. Up from 29. something. She upped my Levo from 50 to 75. She would have gone up to 100 (which is about a full replacement dose for me) but I told her I was feeling pretty okay and didn’t really feel THAT hypo. I had expected close to normal and was amazed that I was even more hypo than before- since I do feel better and even hyper sometimes (hehe, maybe it’s the red bull?). My weight was creeping again and I am feeling rather bloatish, and I think those are hypo signs for me, so we’ll see. Crazy thyroid mess! Oh well, I do feel a ton better than hyper. It would be great to lose 5-10 pounds more, though!

Lacie,
I think it might be the caffeine isn’t helping any. You might want to try and cut down on that. I was still hypo- 33 TSH when I went back too. I have had some crazy days feeling like I am hyper one hour and then so sluggish the next. I am guessing it is just the adjusting. One month at a time…..

Hi All,

Just thought I’d pop back in to let you know that taking diet pills to lose the weight doesnt work…..well it didnt work for me! I lost a total of 2kgs over two and a half months! I’ve decided that the weight will come off its supposed to at some stage and I’m not pushing myself anymore….I’ve bought new clothes to suit my size and if it comes off so be it, if not, too bad. My TSH is up (TS4 a little high my doc tells me but nothing to stress over) and he said I could reduce my meds but I’ve decided I’m happy at this level so see what happens. I’m active but still no change in the weight or fitness levels really.

I hope others have found losing the weight/inflammation easier than I have and if so, share it with us all!

Take care,
Wolfmother

Down 1.6 this week. Yay! Wish it would come off faster, though.

ewmb – Thanks for the update…I thought from your previous post that maybe you had heard of a specific link between caffeine and weight loss.

Lacie – Hopefully, you are getting closer to finding that "sweet spot"! My first week off of caffeine was brutal…major headaches and fatigue. But I had to do it, because it exacerbated my hand tremors to the point where it was really obvious at work. Now I will occasionally have a diet coke or tea at a restaurant, but I always go for the decaf coffee.

Wolfmother – I suspect that for those of us with thyroid issues, weight loss is *never* easy! It’s a slow, frustrating process. I follow Weight Watchers, although I have added a few extra POINTS to my daily target, as my "hungry-meter" was stuck on STARVING for a while! I’ve been backing my POINTS target down a little each week, and things seem to be getting a bit better.

For those of you concerned about your caffeine intake, the Mayo Clinic has compiled some great info. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/caffeine/AN01211 A couple of things I thought was interesting was that 1 cup of drip coffee usually has more caffeine that a one shot espresso beverage. Also, some of the soda makers add more caffiene to their diet version than they do to their regular version.
