139.5 so I think I’m up a pound from last week. 4.5 pounds from where I should be. I ran 30 miles last week and still gained, so that really stinks. Shooting for 40-50 mile range this week and since I have to work all week and I don’t eat much at work (I can’t since I am in my car all day), hopefully I can do better. Work, run, and sleep. Those are my plans for the week. No time to eat.

Ok……..I know I’m joining in this kinda late but I’m sooo depressed about my weight!!! I feel completely gross!! My "normal" weight all my life has been about 125 give or take 5 pounds. The last time I was weighed…….about a month ago I was 152 but I know I have put on quite a bit since then. I don’t want to get out of the house!! I just want to be a shut in! The last time I weighed this much is when I was full-term with my son in December 07. FULL-TERM!!!!!

Nothing fits……I’m tired of having pants ranging from 2 to……who knows these days! I’d rather be a slob in sweats! But, I work waitressing and have to get dressed and deal with people everyday!! Not to mention I have been there for 6 years so most are used to me being about 115-120. BIG DIFFERENCE!!!

Anyway, sorry for the rant…..I needed to get it out!! I’m still hyper….if you can believe that, on 10mg tapazole, 3 times a day in hopes of RAI soon. My doctor talked last week about staying on tapazole in hopes of keeping my levels down and said that works for years sometimes……I was like, really?? What’s the point???? Let’s do the RAI as soon as possible then get leveled out! I mean really, it’s gonna come to that anyway so why not just do it and get on with the rest!! I’m 34 so hopefully I have a long time but want to get stable so I can lose weight. I’m on Inderal for my elevated heart rate and am scared to exercise. But I think I’m about to start starving myself and walking anyway……..I’ll just watch my heart rate!! I can’t take it!!!

Wow……..didn’t mean for this to be so long, sorry!

MIchelle,
I felt the same way two and half years ago. If you want to do RAI don’t let them talk you out of it. It is a viable option and it’s your choice. I understand too about the weight. I have several piles of clothes in my closet. Before hyper, very hyper, after ATDs, going hypo on ATDs, hyper again out of remission, depressed about RAI, having RAI etc…… I know people say to get rid of the clothes that don’t fit but economically that’s a disaster. I am struggling just to stay upbeat this week. My goal is just to try and drink enough water this week. I am waiting to see what happens to my period. I am close to menopause and with the Graves have been so off anyway. When I went hypo on ATDs I had an 11 day period! I am hoping that some of this bloating I have is water weight from that. I am also very weepy this last few days. I hope that’s hormonal too.

Try and eat well and take it easy after work.

Hi Michelle – It is true that some folks are able to maintain their levels long-term on ATDs, and others who are able to enjoy remission. So it’s not a "given" that all Graves patients will eventually have to go the RAI or Thyroidectomy route.

With that said, it’s important to research the pros and cons of all the options, listen to your doctor’s opinion, and then make the decision that’s right for you.

Best of luck!

Hey ewmb – thanks for thinking about me My GP just increased it my 25 so now on 100 – don’ t feel a huge difference but she did feel it would need increased more but best to leave that to my surgeon and endo to decide. I am feeling much better now. I am tired but a complete different tiredness than the hyper feelings. I can cope with this tiredness and plus I am more active. I have started the toddler groups again – YEAH! Never thought that would ever happen.
A tad concerned about the weight gain – but need to stay focused that feeling better is much more important.

How are you feeling?

MRhabetz- I sympathise completely! I was this weight when 8 months pregnant with my 10lb 3oz baby! It so depressing hang in there!

Have decided to (weather permitting) leave the car and try to walk every where if I am feeling well enough that day. I am really having to watch the snacking – which I have done a lot of this week and its only Wed! I am so tired sometimes and I comfort eat…

Good luck for the rest of the week everyone! xxx

Hyperm,
I am feeling more able too. I don’t know about feeling better yet. I’m glad that you are able to get walking. When your muscles start to become stronger again I’m sure the weight will start to come off. I am gaining too at this point. I have been on the hormone for five days now. I am feeling more like cooking again so we are going to start eating a little better again I think. We have some great local corn that we ate last night and I made rice and we had some pork chops. It’s better than bringing something home from town or cereal again. One step at a time is hard. I really want to jump ahead to wonderful again and my husband keeps reminding me how far I’ve come in the past few months.

Take care when you are out and about and enjoy your little ones. I sent one off to college a few weeks ago. They grow so fast.

Hi everyone,

I have been on and off ATD’s for twenty years. Right now I am on 50mg of PTU to try to maintain my levels. I have an appoinment with
my endo October 7 and I am seriously considering asking about the RAI because I am so tired of always worrying about going hyper again
and the side effects of the meds. I did not gain weight while I was on the meds or when I was in remission. I am just wondering after you
do the RAI therapy, and go hypo and then are put on synthroid if you will be able to get back to your normal weight.

I would appreciate hearing from someone who had the RAI a few years ago and how they are doing with their weight now.

Thank you,
Susan

Susan, the short answer is – yes, I did gain a few pounds after RAI 4 years ago.

The long answer is – I had RAI after having 2 babies in a row. Without Graves, that could be my normal weight after having 2 children (from 130 to 150). I don’t know really if the 20 lbs are the maternity or post-RAI weight. In any case, I have been sedentary for all these 4 years, hence can’t say if the 20 lbs are looseable. I think whether it’s the maternity or RAI weight, it can be lost. There are a couple of mile-long beaches here perfect for walking/running…

take care,

Hi Elf,
Thank you for your answer, I reallyappreciate it. How are you feeling health wise after having RAI. Any input would be appreciated.

I hope all is well.

Thanks again,
Susan

Hi Susan,

I was one of those who had no problems with RAI and after it. Had RAI, felt a bit hyper 3 months after it (the last dump), went hypo 5 months after. No hypo crash, felt nothing, started Synthroid based on labs. No dosage adjustments, still use the same dose, 100mcg. Started feeling healthy about a year after RAI, so it’s been 3 years of feeling healthy. When I say "I have Graves", I don’t know what I really have. I feel just a healthy person, with my thyroid supplement provided.

I did have eye troubles for a year after RAI, that is, the hot stage of TED. Then it was over, and my eyes have been cold for 3 years. I got proptosis and am going through OD surgeries right now.

But, I was fearing the eye problems much less than living in fear of becoming hyper or hypo for many years…. I guess people put different weight on their fears.

Hope you will find your answer soon,
elf

Hi again,
Thank you for all of you information it really helps. What I would like to ask you is if you had eye problems from your thyroid before the RAI?
I myself have not in all the years of being on and off of PTU. I am just wondering if that comes from the RAI treatment. There are so many
side effects that I have been reading about from the RAI on this site. I am so confused, but another part of me feels it would be better
than having to constantly worry if I am going hyper again.

Again I thank you for sharing all of your information about this disease with me.

I realize there are a lot of people out there with a lot of worse problems, so I guess we are blessed to have something that we can take care of
if we could make the decision.

Thank you and all the best to you.

God Bless,
Susan

Susan,

I had a very beginning of TED (puffy lid on one eye) 2 months after my Graves diagnosis, and had RAI the month after. So I would say there was a slight sign of TED. You not having TED for 20 years, is quite an achievement. I met people whose RAI didn’t result in TED, or TED appeared 8-10 years after RAI. But I also met people who didn’t have RAI and still had TED. This is one big consideration to think about.

Personally, though, I know that TED is not the end of the world, – but I know it’s easier to say now, past the hot stage. The surgery I used to be so scary of, is not a big deal in the hands of a good surgeon.

Take care,
elf

Hi Elf,

Thank you for answering my questions so quickly. I really appreciate all the information. I always thought as far as the eye problems I was home free,
but I guess with this disease you just never know.

Thank you again and God Bless,
Susan

Well weight loss Graves’ friends, I seem to have a problem! I’m getting thicker by the day! Hardly eating and running my butt off and it’s like I’m a SPONGE and I’m rapidly expanding!!! It’s all that food I ate when I was hyper coming back to haunt me– nothing is free, right??? I feel awesome, though. I feel strong and can run fast again. I worked 6 days this week, ran 7 days, kept up with all of my housework, did my core exercises every day and have energy again. I EVEN COOKED DINNER last night – which I NEVER do. I guess next week I really need to write my food down. Maybe I’m hypo? Who knows– since the darn doctor office never called me back with my results from over a week ago. I was too busy to bug them about it. I think I need a new doctor. My clothes that were too big when I was hyper are starting to be too tight and I can see that I am retaining more water as I look puffy. I keep thinking the weight has to stabilize at some point since I am really hardly eating at all- but the scale just keeps going up, up, up!

Lacie,
I am doing the same thing. The puffy bloated feeling and the weight coming on every day it seems. I have only been on the levoxyl for a week so we’ll see if my weight can start to stabilize some. Sorry you didn’t get your results. I was wondering why we hadn’t heard from you. Sounds like you have been really happy this week. Keep it up.
