Dear Sherry,
I am sure you will hear from those who have had surgery. It is a procedure done by a skilled, experienced surgeon (experienced in thyroid surgery). It is done under general anesthesia; the scar will probably be small. It can involve one to three days in the hospital. If you will send me an e-mail ("nancyngdf@bellsouth.net") I will forward you an excellent article on surgery. I just haven’t figured out how to do it from this board.
Sherry posted this question the other day, and I saw that no one had answered her — probably because her subject was "Hi, from Sherry," and did not reflect her need for information. So, here is her question, again.
My daughter has to have surgery to have a goiter removed, can anyone tell me how it went for them, and how the recovery process was? She is 18, and very nervous about this, and so am I. Thanks!
Sherry,
I had my surgery last year at 39. After the surgery I had a minor sore throat for three days. Besides that I felt great. The scar is so minimal that you would not even see it unless I pointed it out. Of all the surgeries I have had, and I have had many, that was by far the easiest. I’m sure your daughter will do great.
ZZZZESTY
Sherry — I had a total thyroidectomy on Dec. 1st (I also had two fairly large nodules), and found the surgery to be very easy (I’m an oldster age 58). I had very little post-op pain, and only had to be in the hospital overnight, so insurance considered it as an out-patient procedure. My scar is only about 3" long, and my surgeon placed it where I already had a fold of skin, so it is practically unnoticable. The only pain I experienced was a sore throat from being intubated, but it was managable with Tylenol and soft food for a day or so. I was walking the halls of the hospital the evening after surgery, and I was up and around a few days later, able to do some light housework, cooking, and short shopping trips. I did get tired easily the first few weeks, but would nap or rest often as needed.
Hope your daughter does well.
I had thyroid surgery about ten years ago. I am currently 35 yrs. old. I had a large goiter and had that removed at the same time. The surgery went well and there were no side effects due to the operation. I am glad I had it done and would not change my choice.
