Hi — I’m glad you have come through the surgery and are on the way to better health.

One of the potential side effects of the thyroidectomy, though, is damage to the nerve that runs to the vocal cords (and not necessarily damage to the cords themselves). Whether that has happened to you, or not, is something your doctor can weigh in on. Asking a doctor you trust about the issue might give you information about how to cope with it so that you don’t make things worse while your throat is healing.

    Hi all,

I was just wondering those of you who have had surgery how long did it take for your voice to come back? I am basically croaking – I know that my voice should have recovered from the tube down my airway (had this before so know its not that) so am staring to get a little worried this is me for life. My sister never had any vocal problems after her op – para – thyroidectomy. I can’t raise my voice and when I talk its like Marge Simpson on a a really really bad day. I used to love to sing and even when I am trying to settle my little one with what voice I have it goes completely off tune – like I have no control. It offers much hilarity for my husbby and my eldest but now I am starting to get worried.

My surgeon never mentioned that she noticed any vocal cord damage and I go for a check up in 5 weeks time. Don’t get me wrong I am very thankful that God has brought me through this operation but I just hope that this isn’t my voice for life <img decoding=” title=”Wink” />
Should I be worried/ mention to someone?

    M xx

    Hi Bobbi,

Thanks for that info – I hope that all is ok but will def get it checked out! My friend is a speech and language therapist – I wonder if she knows anything about it.

    Many thanks again xx
