    Hi CEJ,
What does he mean he won’t do surgery? Surgery is one of the accepted choices. I had the surgery last summer and I feel great now. I am 43 and my doctors told me they were not sure what the long term affect of RAI would be on a woman my age. The choice was very easy for me.

Maybe you should get a second opinion or find an MD that will truly let you participate in making the choice that is right for you.

Good luck and let me know if I can help.

I have been on PTU for two years and now my doctor says it is not working so must make a decision. Why are my legs giving me so much trouble, it is hard to walk and bend my knees, is this a side effect of PTu or of Graves, I am 52 and feel 92!! My legs are very painful, please help.

my legs hurt a lot too. especially in the joints and my right knee has lost the space between my lower and upper bone, indicating replacement knee surgery? I can’t hardly sleep at night with the leg pain.

I was diagnosed with Graves disease about 4 years ago. I had RAI done and had a rollercoaster ride to get back to feeling somewhat normal. I did level off and had felt fairly good for a while. However, a couple of months ago, after picking up leaves in our back yard, I was very sore in my waist, hips and legs. I took it easy and thought that I just wasn’t used to that much exercise. The sore hips/waist and joints have continued. I seem to wake up feeling sore. After a few hours I feel better, but later in the evening, especially if I have done too much housework, I feel very sore and achy again. My GYN Dr. said that my levels are right in the middle of perfect..however, I don’t feel perfect. He did say that Graves Disease can have many symptoms, like frequent headaches, which I have, but also increased risk of breast cancer, elevated cholestrol levels..etc. I am almost certain these pains in my hips are from the Graves Disease, but I am not sure what to do about it. I recently switched from Synthroid to the generic brand of synthroid. I would like to feel good enough to exercise on a regular basis, but I am afraid that it will make me very sore and achy.
Has anyone else had these symptoms?
    Thanks

    Hi Jenna,

I can only tell you that I too have hip joint pain. It comes and goes every few days and I too feel worse in the mornings. For over a year I have gone from very hyper to hyper, striving for normal since my thyroidectomy six months ago. My Endo has suggested some other autoimmune disease might be involved. Until I get to a normal TSH level I will assume this hip stuff is from being “off.” Exercise doesn’t help
but, I do exercise. On the days when I have a difficult time walking I avoid the gym. No headaches.

There are diseases liked to Graves, however; I don’t believe breast cancer is one of them. I really hope your Gyn Dr. was mistaken.

I too also get the hip and lower back pain. Somedays it is worse than others and it does not seem to help if I exercise. I had a bone density and it did show a decrease in my left hip but not in the red zone yet. There advise was to stay active and keep taking my calcium.

I had symptoms similar to yours which got so bad that I couldn’t sit still for fear of my joints getting so stiff that it was extremely painful. I finally had my blood tested and darned if I wasn’t hypothyroid.
