Hopefully, like me, you will discover that once your thyroid levels are well-regulated, after surgery or RAI, you won’t have to worry about having panic attacks ever again. Mine completely went away with appropriate treatment for my Graves. One thing that did help me, while I was still having the attacks, though, was to know that the body doesn’t sustain the adrenalin rush (or whatever it is) for very long. Twenty minutes or so is about how long an attack lasts on average. Knowing that, somehow helped me get through them until they went away, so I pass it along.

Well i went to see my doctor a couple weeks ago because i started having panic attacks at work…i already had really bad anxiety and it just moved on to full on attacks… he put me on zoloft and xanax ..he also put me on proponolol sp?? for my heart rate and high blood pressure and over doubled my thyroid meds…this has helped with the physical symptoms but not really the mental problems…i actually quit my job last week because of problems with focusing and anxiety, depression, mood swings…i realize now that i probally quit for the wrong reason and i quit impulsively but i guess i have to live with that now…I’ve been diagnosed for a year and half now and it seems to just get worse…i have an apt with the endo tomorrow i guess to discuss options…i think i am going to go with the surgery because my eye problems are bad enough and i don’t want to worsen them with RAI …i just hope i can get sorted out soon because i feel like i’m losing my mind….and of couse before my insurance runs out wish me luck!

Thanks bobbi

Had bloodwork done today to see if my levels are close enough to normal to do the surgery…he said i should know by tomorrow…and then he’ll set me up an apt to talk to the surgeon…he doubled my dose of proponolol so we’ll see how it goes…i asked him the benefits of surgery all he could say is that i would only have to take one pill a day and that i would get rid of my goiter….i’m trying to weigh the pros and cons before i talk to the surgeon …

Hi Snapshot!
Just a thought, I think you will have a better idea of the pros and cons after you talk with the surgeon. You will probably get a better idea of the post op recovery period at home from this marvelous bulletin board! One question you can ask is if he removed all of the thyroid, or if he leaves some of the thyroid. A couple recent posts have let me to think that both options are still done, but perhaps they are doing only total thyroidectomies now. I am not entirely sure of my info on this. The webside of ngdf says either or are done, but one of the faciltators mentioned that the current practice was total thyroidectomy. At any rate, that can be a question. It will be the endocrinologist you will have a long term relationship with to manage thyroid supplement if you need it.
My feelings of panic an anxiety went away after my surgery. Could not believe it.
