Kelly – hello! I live in San Francisco and was diagnosed a year ago. I too got alarmed reading the bulletin board. I’m 28 and vain as hell! Ha ha. I opted for PTU instead of RAI and it’s been a roller coaster. My last blood test came back overactive, so my doctor (Kaiser/Nuclear Medicine) recommends RAI pretty firmly. So I did some research and found an Endocrinologist at UCSF, and I’m going to see him for a 2nd opinion. I’ll let you know how it goes – I can’t recommend him yet, although he seems nice and took the time to respond to my e-mail. Hang in there, and write me if you want. I live in the inner Richmond – where do you live?

Hi,My name is Kelly and like many of you, I’ll recently been diagnosed with this wonderful little gem, Grave’s Disease. I’ve been researching in the library and on the web, trying to get a handle on it. I’m on the beta blockers now and need to select a treatment option soon. I’m leaning towards the RAI. I live in the San Francisco and am searching for a good endocrinologist. Any one have any recommendations? (My HMO is pretty wide-reaching, so hopefully the Doc will be on my list.)Since Friday, when I got my test results, I’ve been a bit…I guess, a bit in denial. I mean, I have a DISEASE and one that won’t ever go away!! In reading all your responses, I’m a bit discouraged about the hair loss. I’m 33, single, vain and clogging the drain! How long will the hair keep falling out??Thanks,Kelly

    Kelly,

I’m 33, too. My hair WAS falling out in chunks. It’s been 3 1/2 months or so on
meds and it is slowing down. In fact, I think it’s only falling out
in a normal amount…but I’m just more sensitive to it! I just had
a baby before this and that didn’t help with the hair loss.
But don’t worry….It will pass. Glynis

Hi Cindy,Actually reading the BB has helped me some. My doctor (at California Pacific) hasn’t taken the time to fill me in on all the risks/side affects/future complications/etc. When I ask her stuff, she is rathershort with me. (I wish they would teach more bed-side manner classes in medical school!!) So, I’ve been reading/researching a lot on my own.I haven’t found anything that would lead me to believe that goodintentions and a better diet will fix me!! How were you able to find your Doc?? I live in South Beach (that relatively new area in SOMA underneath theBay Bridge.) I’ve been there five years and the neighborhood is finallygetting restaurants and a “homey” feel. Forever it felt like I was living in the deserted warehouse district that it was!!Ciao,Kelly
