Since having Graves, my eyes have been very dry. I had a eye checkup a month ago after my diagnosis to check for eye issues and outside of dryness, none were found. Recently, however, I developed a tear in my retina requiring emergency cryosurgery. Has this problem, torn/detached retinas, been found to be a consequence of Graves?
I’ve never heard of a torn retina being related to Graves’ Disease, nor have I seen it written about in the literature. Have you asked your doctor this question?
I was recently diagnosed with Graves (March) and up until then I had 20/20 vision. I had lasik surgery in 2000 and an eye injury that tore my retina when about 20 years ago. I now have a blind spot on my eye and several floaters. The doctor has told me that my eye is pulling away from the retina now, the scarring from my eye injury is now different (???) and I have 20/60 vision. This is just in one eye…but since November or so, I have also had very dry eyes. From what I understand…Graves can affect many things that you wouldn’t think of…
Graves’ can affect many areas of the body, that’s true, but typically it doesn’t include a torn retina. You say it had been torn previously, so it’s far more likely to be related to the prior incident than to Graves’.
As always, ask the doctor for their take on it and let us know!
I had an old scar, but for 22 years has not given me any problems. My doctor said that Graves circulates blood faster and that it may have aggrevated the scar that I had. Once that happened I developed a blind spot and lots of floaters. Wondering if maybe too much pressure behind the eye with increased blood circulation could be the problem. Doctor said I have the eyes of a 60 year old now (I am 37) yay me!
