Hi all!
I’m in CT at my parents’ house and will be having my surgery tomorrow at 7:15 AM! I have to be there 2 hours early. As long as everything goes well, I’ll be able to come back to my parents’ house after 4 hours of observation (instead of staying over night at the hospital!) I didn’t expect that, but it’s fine by me as long as I’m okay. I’m supposed to take 4 Tums (calcium) a day everyday the 1st week, 3 Tums a day the 2nd week, 2 Tums a day the 3rd week, and then 1 Tums a day for the 4th week after surgery. The surgeon said the parathyroid glands often get inflamed after surgery and that will help with the calcium. He said Tylenol or Advil should be enough for pain as it shouldn’t be very painful. Shirley, the hospital wants me to pump and dump for 24 hours after anesthesia. I thought it was okay to nurse right after, but I’ve weaned him 7 days for the SSKI drops, so I guess what’s 1 more day. The surgeon said to start taking Synthroid on the 3rd day after surgery. So, that is the plan. I’m nervous, but I’m going to hope and pray that all goes well. I’ll let you all know how it goes once I’m feeling coherent and up to doing that- hopefully within a day or 2! Thank you all for the support so far in my Graves journey.

Pump and dump for 24 hours after anesthesia sounds very conservative.
Try asking again, ask YOUR anesthesiologist, whom you will meet before you go to before you go in the OR. I imagine you will be asked if you have any questions. You do, so ask how long the surgery usually is (I’d expect you’ll be told around 2 hours.) Then ask if you can feed your baby when you get home, when you feel like it. Get another opinion, maybe it will be more to your liking.
Either way, you will soon be connected with that baby soon! The waiting is almost over.
How did he do, taking a supplement? There was NO WAY I could be the person giving the bottle. They are way too smart for that!
Best of everything to you!
ShirleyHi!
I will ask the anesthesiologist when I see him. Zack (baby) did pretty well with the bottle. The 4 day weaning for the uptake scan was way harder. He made a face at first, then he was fine with it (even from me). So, that made me feel better. I’m hoping he’ll be happy to nurse again; I think so. We’ll see. Well, better try to get some sleep. I will let you all know how it goes.

Good Luck and I can’t to hear/read about how everything went! (When you feel up to it)
Stephanie
Good luck to you!
Good luck and I wish you the very best in your recovery.
