    Hello!
I will be getting a thyroid scan next week and was wanting to ask anyone for your experience and what i should expect. I heard that I will have to swallow a radioactive iodine pill the first day then come back the next day for the scan.

I’m a little nervous especially since the “radioactive pill” sounds so scary to me and I’m wondering if this is almost the same as the therapy RAI. Any info will be appreciated!

    Thank you so much,
    Happy New Year!

Yes you do take a radioactive pill 24 hours before you have the scan. It is a very small dose of radioactive iodine, too small to be concern with. Then you go back 24 hours later for the scan to see how much iodine your thyroid has absorbed. This can help with seeing the size of the thyroid and it is done prior to RAI.

I had the uptake & scan last month. I was just diagnosed in November. I fully understand being nervous but like everyone said, it is a breeze. First you will go to the lab and they will give you a pill. Then you return later that day to have the tests. You sit in a chair and the tech puts a small machine in front of your neck. This tests the amount of iodine absorbed into your thyroid. This lasts about 5 minutes. Then you lay down on a table and a scan is done of your thyroid. This lasts about 15 minutes. Then next day, you return and they do another uptake of the absorbtion of the iodine.

That’s it. I spent more time driving there then having the tests. No pain. I just had the RAI done 3 weeks ago. That was a breeze too. Just popped a pill and that was it. I don’t need any lights now but nah, just kidding.

Just relax and don’t stress about it. I did and it turned out to be a piece of cake. You will do fine. Let me know how you make out.

Question-I had my thyroid scan done in December because my primary dr ordered it. I’m not ready to have RAI yet, on Tapazole now, still waiting for better blood test results. Does that mean I’ll have to have the scan re-done right before the RAI?? Or can they use the December results?

I am off for my scan this morning…..finally one step in this process.

I am nervous….yesterday I had a very bad bout of heart palpitations, in spite of the medication my doctor gave me for them.

I’m not sure what to expect today…
