    Hi Krisann,
My experience is that I had some hair loss after I switched to generic to Synthroid. I went back to Synthroid, no more problems. I also felt (imagined or not) that I " better" on Synthroid. That is really hard to assess, even for myself! I did not have extreme hair loss, not in clumps, but it was noticeable-to me, not to others. Synthroid is definitely is more expensive.

My hair is falling out…. lately in clumps… It’s happened before but last time I hadn’t had RAI yet. So I have some new questions.
I had RAI on 3/16 and am on 50mg of Levothyroxine. I’ve read on the Rx paperwork that it can cause hair loss for a few months. I’m also aware that the hormone changes can cause hair loss. I went from pre RAI hyper (extreme) to standard post RAI hypo to overmedicated hyper again and judging by the way I’ve been feeling I’m now starting to level out. I’ve heard a few people say that they had to switch to Synthroid because their hair loss got so bad or it didn’t stop.

    My questions are:

How long should I wait before demanding a change? Other than this hair loss Levothyroxine (generic) hasn’t been bad to me. Also I can’t even guarantee it’s the medicine doing this because of my hormone fluctuations.

How long is normal to just keep losing hair like this?

    Help?

Generally speaking, if the hair is coming out in clumps, it can be due to being hypO. Also, generally speaking, it isn’t so much thyroid hair as SICK hair. Our bodies deny nutrients and resources to the hair when we are ill. Ditto nails. So, when we are not in a healthy state, our hair (and nails) will show it. They are the first to lose nutrient support, and the last to get it back.

So to follow up. Assuming that it may be related to my recent dose change or to the Levothyroxine (pamphelet says can cause hair loss in the beginning)…..

Does anyone know how long it’s normal? As far as I know I’m not hypo. I was just tested a few weeks ago at slightly hyper so he lowered my dose from 75mg’s to 50mg’s. I’d like to know approx how long it’s normal? Basically I don’t want to bring it up to my Dr until it’s reasonable to.

Some hair loss can occur anytime your levels are moving rapidly, even if they’re moving from an unhealthy level to a healthy level, or just moving within the normal range ~ it is not a normal occurrence for the thyroid hormone levels to change so much in "normal life," so the body translates these large shifts as a state of emergency, and that triggers the removal of resources from the "non-essential" functions, like nails and hair. So you may find that some level of hair loss continues until your levels are normal, and have also been stable for some period of time. It shouldn’t be BIG hair loss consistently, it’s usually somewhat milder than that, so if you continue to lose large clumps of hair, you should ask your doctor to investigate and find out if there’s another reason behind it.

Every time my meds are adjusted, my hair thins out and then regrows. The first yr or so after RAI was the worst and I was on synthyroid so I dont think it would have mattered what kind of replacement.
Nioxin shampoo and biotin supplements helped a lot. I use the 10 minute home hair coloring because my scalp is sensitive too through those times & salon seems to over process it. The hair does grow back in. If you have toenails break cause they are thinner, there are some awesome products & tricks with nail glue that help and I used tea tree oil around the toenail beds to help keep infection away from tears.
Be gentle with brushing and styling, a layered haircut hides the regrowth and the weaker hair that may break. Watch this summer you don’t sunburn your part.
