Trying to get an idea of the window to watch closely….:)

-how long were you taking it before the weight gain started?

-how long did you gain weight until it plateaued (ie. gained for 3 mos and then it stopped at that weight)?

    Hi ,
I was on 30 mg Methimazole & 40 mg Beta blocker for my first 30 days and went from a size 6 to a 12 in that time with alot of fat around my middle. I thought I was turning into Humpty Dumpty. My fat gain slowed down as soon as my beta blocker was discontinued and the Meth dose dropped to 10 mg. Eventually, once you start exercising and build muscle again, your body shape will return to somewhat normal, but it took me about a year and a half to get rid of the fatty deposits. Only lost a size so far but maybe I was too thin when I was really ill and did not realize it!
I guess the important thing is to get that darn thyroid regulated so that you can feel well. I was fat but sure felt so much better than before. People say I look great now!

Hello – Every patient is different…some have no issues with weight, and for others (like me), it’s a constant struggle to maintain a healthy weight.

Interestingly, my weight issues started *after* I was diagnosed as hyperthyroid but *before* the doctors determined it was Graves’ and started me on Methimazole.

Right now, I’m off *all* processed foods. The extra weight is finally starting to come off, but you might see me on the national news one night as the lady who snapped and hijacked a Nabisco truck! :)

I wish I could go back and tell my newly diagnosed self to keep “fighting the good fight” in terms of living a healthy lifestyle…BUT to try not to let the extra weight cause so much angst! (Actually, that’s still good advice 5 years later…)

My experience: on 20mg Meth and 25mg beta daily for 6 weeks. No weight gain. Actually the hyperactivity caused me to lose some weight and the treatment to date hasn’t caused any gain, which I’m thinking could mean I’m still hyper. So while I want to get healthy I’m very scared of going hypo and gaining weight since I’m in menopause and its a weight-gaining time of life anyway! I know weight gain is probably inevitable. My sister is also Graves with RAI…she experienced very little weight gain and has been stable with little to no issues or adjustments for years. Hoping same happens for me.
