I’m hoping someone on this board can give me some info. I had RAI in mid Dec. Since then, I have been extremely thirsty. Even getting up during the night to drink water. (my mouth is very dry) When i wake up in the AM, I usually drink almost a quart of water. Back in Dec. the endo said RAI can cause dry mouth, but i am concerned because it has not abated. Is this a normal side effect of RAI? I am also very hypo at this time (started 150 micrograms of synthroid 10 days ago). Perhaps it is due to being hypo? I suppose the extra H2O is good for me, but it is annoying when thirst & the obvious consequences disturb my sleep. Thanks.
Hi. I can’t answer you about the RAI. However, I have had the same problem in the past. Usually my eyes were very dry at the same time.
When my thyroid levels are good, this symptom goes away. But when I was having a bad time of it, my endo did check me for diabetes. I didn’t have it. I seemed to take in a lot more than I put out. With diabetes, usually the urine output increases as well. If the problem is causing you to get up in the middle of the night to pee, ask your doctor about whether you should be checked for diabetes. That is a classic symptom according to my sister-in-law (diabetic since the age of

I haven’t had RAI so I don’t know if this will help but when I went to the endo a few weeks ago I mentioned that one of my worst symtoms was extreme thirst. He checked a few things and said that it looked hypercalcemia (the body taking calcium out of my bones) and that is the reason I am so thirsty all the time. So perhaps that could be the reason you are so thirsty.
Iwas terribly thirsty before starting the meds…now that I am off them (supposedly to have rai on the 13th but now reconsidering) i am starting to be thirsty an awful lot again.

Thanks bugg, hoowa and angie…all things to think about. I see the endo soon, so will address it with her then. Meanwhile, CHEERS to another gal. of H2O!
I haven’t had the RAI yet and I have been extemly thirsy for months now. Even more so on the apazole. I hope this helps.
BarbsWell, I finally got up the nerve to call the endo about my constant “thirst”. Kept hoping it would stop or diminish or something. But all the posts replying to my first post about being thirsty mentioned diabetes and got me thinking I probably shouldn’t ignore this one. The endo’s office is sending me for a complete metabolic profile along with my regular labs next week. I guess that because I have also lost some more weight they are concerned about my glucose levels. I gained 4 pounds in Dec. after RAI, but lost 6 in Jan. I thought it was just returning to work that caused the weight loss. We’ll see. Is it common for diabetes to pop up with Grave’s?
Yes, it is something that’s likely to happen, mostly because anybody that has one autoimmune condition has a higher probability of getting another. Of course, Graves’ and diabetes are both autoimmune conditions. I met someone over Thanksgiving that was diagnosed with diabetes and Graves’ within the same week, poor thing. Talk about turning into a research hound! And of course each condition complicates management of the other. I believe there are a few people posting here that have both conditions, so if your test results turn out positive for diabetes, maybe they can give you some real help.
