Hi everyone,
I know others have mentioned the lump in the throat feeling, long after going through RAI. Mine comes and goes. I was wondering if it could be that phantom feeling kind of thing that people who have lost a limb feel? I know that my thyroid gland isn’t swollen, and that my shirt collar isn’t really rubbing against my throat, but still, I feel like someone has their finger just lightly pushing against my neck. Then hours or a day or so later, it’s gone.
Any thoughts?

Hi, from the beginning I could not stand anything against my neck. No jewelry or high collars. My closet was full of “suit” blouses which I finally gave away. Even now I can’t stand anything rubbing on my neck. A gal I work with had thyroid surgery and says the same thing. I don’t get a lumpy feeling – it just “bothers” me. Actually in the beginning I couldn’t stand earrings or even my watch or rings.
Blynn,
I too have the lump in the throat feeling sometimes. Mine happens mostly at night, the pain wakes me up out of my sleep and it feels like there is a golf ball lodged in my throat when I try to swallow. At first, I thought I was about to get sick, as a sore throat was a sure sign of a cold or flu to come. I’d wake up with that sore throat for weeks at a time but never got sick. It comes and goes, and is pretty annoying. I also feel like I don’t want anything touching my neck, I would never wear a shirt buttoned all the way to the neck, or a short lengthed necklace. I’ve read some other responses to your post and I just have to wonder, it sounds like a psychological thing for all of us, the aftermath of having experienced swollen necks, but at least we’re not alone!
Blynn,
Hi. It never fails that when I come to this board with questions, I find someone else experiencing the same thing I am! For the last few days I have had this feeling in my throat. It doesn’t hurt, it’s just a noticable pressure. I can really feel it when I swallow. I have not had the RAI, though. I have just started back on anti-thyroid drugs about 2 weeks ago. I was wondering if it is the medicine or if my thyroid has become swollen. I went to the endo about 3 weeks ago. She felt my neck and didn’t seem to notice anything out of the ordinary but I wasn’t having this feeling at that time. I have been under a lot of stress for the last week and I wonder if that has triggered this. Sorry I don’t have any answers, just more questions. I plan to go see my primary doctor as soon as possible to see if in fact my thyroid is enlarged. If it is, I’ll go back to the endo. Please let me know if you discover any useful info and I’ll do the same.
Thanks,
TristaHi Trista, my name is Michelle and I am new here on the board. If it is any help, I have had that same feeling on and off for the past year (all of which I have been on antithyroid drugs). I know exactly what you are talking about. My throat does not feel soar, however it does feel swollen.
Hello,
I am 8 months post RAI and I started recently again feeling like someone was holding a finger or something right tight against my throat. I go to my Dr for blood test on the 11th I was going to ask him if this is normal.
Sure is intersting to come on here and read your very own life story. Well that is how it seems right.
Many Blessings
