I don’t recall exactly where you are in your treatment, but if your levels have been controlled, then you shouldn’t be experiencing bone loss any more. If you were hyperthyroid for a long period of time before you were correctly diagnosed, that could have affected your bone mass and it may be showing up now, but the bone mass doesn’t continue to be sapped once we’re successfully treated.

I would say this is a good one for your dentist to evaluate, and even maybe for a return visit to your orthodontist (or a new one, if you’re no longer in touch with the original).

Thanks for the response. In response to your question. My GD hasn’t been controlled in over 3 yrs. I have been basically without insurance, being treated through ER visits; at present, I’m appealing my second SSI/Disability denial. But, if any changes I will try to find someone who may be able to see me.

Are you taking some kind of ATD regularly at least? Graves’ is VERY dangerous, left untreated, and leads to more and more problems, the longer it is unmanaged. The meds can be provided free through government programs (different states have different systems), but you need something to keep you safe.

Under these circumstances, it is possible that your teeth are being eaten away through the hyperthyroidism. Please find out what you can do to get help. There are people here who may be able to point you to some good resources. I’m not an expert, and I don’t want to lead you astray, but I know there are programs you could take advantage of.

Now I know that pregnancy weakens your teeth, due to calcium being given to the baby. And that is usually the time the teeth are more vulnerable to cavities. But I have noticed in the last two or three years that I have been having alot of pain in my teeth.

They are bones, and my Graves’ is definitely depleting nourishment to mine; so I was wondering if it is part of my dental problem. Is it normal? Also, I had braces from 4th grade to the summer before 9th grade and I prided myself with my very white and very straight teeth. Now they are diminishing in color; and there is a gap between my top and bottom teeth.

What can I do? Will I have to get braces again as an adult? Or are my teeth to weak to go through this again? Anyone…..help!

Oh, I understand the dangers. Being one doctor told me that I am the text of everything that could possibly be wrong with on an appearance level; I am currently taking 300mg of PTU daily. The last doctor I saw set me at that amount, I will probably go back to the ER soon. I already know this is only to "pacify" my thyroid til I can have it removed.

Well, that’s a choice for you to make ~ the dose of PTU is supposed to be constantly evaluated against lab tests, it typically comes way down within the first couple of months, because once the PTU is effective and managing your levels, you don’t need as much to keep the levels normal, and too much will make you hypo, another kind of misery. I hope you are able to get some kind of consistent care. Your body can’t really heal until the levels are normal, and stable.

Hello – I have pain issues off and on with my teeth. My dentist gave me a toothpaste with extra flouride, and using that for a few days (and avoiding super crunchy foods) usually helps things to settle down.

I read an article once that stated that patients with hyperthyroidism can experience the rapid onset of periodontal disease, so I have been pretty religious with getting my checkups done every 6 months. (And this is coming from someone who once went about 4 years without seeing a dentist  ).

I know this might be a challenge without insurance — but I would definitely consult a dentist about the issues you are experiencing.

    Good luck!

I’m not sure in our letter writings if you are on any type of steroid. The reason I mention this is almost all of my teeth have fallen out due to my being on steroids for such a long length of time. Let me know if you are on any. You’re always in my thoughts and in my prayers. I hope things are going along a little faster with my advise.

They told me I should here from them about my appeal process in about 2 wks.; which sounds alot better than 120 days. The amount of time it took me to hear ANY thing about the first time I applied. I will definitely keep you updated. Guess that letter to Gov. really helped.

No, the only time I am on steroids are the times I have bouts with my asthma. That is usually the 8,7,6,etc of prednisone.

I agree with SKi. You need to moniter your lab tests at least 4-6 weeks in the beginning. I was on PTU 300mg and went hypo in 2 weeks…terrible…almost worst than hyper to me. Also, it is wise to get your liver enyzmes checked when you have been on ATD’s at high dosages for long periods of time.

About your teeth, I have had 3 children and my teeth changed a bunch. I ended up having invisalign to straighten them out again. It took 6 months of wearing retainers at night. I also have to use sensitive toothpaste and a fluride rinse everynight (including flossing every night to help strengthen the gums). My teeth are much more sensitive since Graves disease DX. You just have to take extra special care of your body. Blessings to you~
