I know we have all seen mention that smoking seems related to a higher incidence of TED. I just wanted everyone to know my experience with it.
I have been smoking for over 20 years. I was diagnosed with Graves over a year ago and have developed TED during the past 10 months. The more pain and discomfort I felt…the more I smoked. I noticed that the pain andd vision problems increased with the amount I was smoking. The symptoms developed on their own, but the pain was always increasing with the amount of cigarettes I smoked. I have quit as of 3 weeks ago, I can tell you that it has had a positive effect on how I feel. There is more than a connection or relation. I will go as far to say that it is a direct control mechanism over how bad you feel. The more you smoke…the worse you get. The reason I am writing this is as a warning to all smokers with TED…..STOP RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!! Quit!! Do anything to become a non smoker ASAP!!!
Best wishes everyone for good health!!
Thanks so much for posting your personal experience ~ it speaks louder than a hundred studies. ” title=”Very Happy” /> If you help even one person get through the experience of TED with less symptoms, you’ve done a very good thing!
I was diagnosed with Graves 3 years ago and have struggled with ups and downs. The TED has become worse over the past year and I am looking into surgery. The surgeon told me to quit smoking and why. I had read things about it and the Endo. told me that I needed to quit, but with no explanation. Anyone who smokes knows how difficult it is to quit. But I called my Dr today and they have called me a prescription of Chantix into the pharmacy. I had quit previously for 6 months by using that. And the weird thing is that about a month after I started smoking again is when this whole mess started. I’m told that it didn’t have anything to do with it, but I’m thinking it did. I wondered how it would make a difference with the disease and you have helped me with that. Thank you.
