There is another option to taping the eyelids closed for sleeping which doesn’t seem to get much mention on the BB. My oculoplastic surgeon suggested using a blindfold over the ointment filled eyes which apparently is more comfortable for some individuals, including myself. I had tried taping but found it difficult when I had to “get up” during the night & stubbed a few toes in the dark before the tape could be removed. I’ve collected the airline blindfolds over the years. They work just great & can be flipped up in a second when we need instant night vision. Some have an adjustable strap or a knot can be tied in the elastic band to adjust pressure on or off the eyes as needed. They are easily laundered by hand to remove the remmants of the lubricant. Despite daily cleanings, I’ve been using the same four blindfolds for years now. So,they are also a thrifty solution. Other types of “sleeping masks” can be purchased at most pharmacies and even in the travel sections of department/discount stores.
So for those of you who have difficulty with taping for whatever reason, this is another well recommended “helpful hint” from one who has used this method for two years. My proptosis has been moderate at about 24-26mm…nothing as severe as Nancy P.with 32mm. This method may or may not work as well for someone with an extreme case of proptosis. If in doubt, always ask the doctor’s advise.
Do get the best rest possible for those weary eyes
