Your thyroid swells when your thyroid levels are out of balance, in either direction (hypo OR hyper), and the swelling goes down as the thyroid levels come back to the normal range.
The uptake results for Graves’ are exactly as you describe ~ the entire thyroid takes up the iodine, but no nodules or unusual patterns, just across the thyroid AND a high percentage of uptake. A normal thyroid would have far less "lit up," and the uptake would be a much smaller number. Nodules are typically NOT a part of Graves’ Disease.
I hope that helps!
Greetings Everyone!
I hope everyone is doing well. I have yet another question. Before I started the ptu my levels were not normal, I don’t know what they were because I don’t have the results with me. So the doc ordered a radioactive iodine uptake test. The test came back and showed that my entire thyroid was lit up. BUT the thyroid was not abnormal shape or swollen and there were no tumors etc… I started taking ptu 4 weeks ago this Thursday. I say my pc doc on Tuesday and she decided to palpated my throat and do a general exam. She started pressing down and it was SO soar. I had no idea it was like that until that moment. The doc said " feel that…it’s swollen." So my questions are 1- can the meds make my thyroid imflammed?- the first week on ptu I could barely swallow or eat. I knew it wasn’t strep or anything because it wasn’t my throat exactly it was my neck. I almost went to the emergency room but we were having my family over for c-mas so I didn’t. I just took lots of pain killer to get through those 3 days. After the 3 days I was fine. Then came the horrendous body aches…few days later when I couldn’t stand it any more, they were gone too. 2- What does it mean when the thyroid is inflammable? Is that bad or what?
I don’t seems to have any side effects right now from the meds and if they are working I would like to stay on them. I don’t want to be switching meds and radioactive iodine isn’t an option….unless really sick and running out of optioons. The whole idea makes me cringe,…just a personal preference. Thanks for reading. I could really use some help here! lol
hugs,
Thanks Ski….
